Australorps breed Thread

Thought I must be overdue for another share of our little cutie Pepper. Loving this splash colour, its even prettier in real life than it looked in photos. Such a soft grey.

So just for fun is everyone still voting boy - 6 weeks old today.

It was actually kinda hard to get these because it kept getting too close and climbing up on my knee and the camera couldnt focus that close lol So much for broody reared chicks aren't as friendly :) It eats out of your hand, lets me pat it and comes running when it sees me :) Is sooooo not allowed to be a boy!!!!!!!!!!!

I. Am. DYING. <3

Do any of you with mixed flocks find that your Australorps are at the bottom of the pecking order? My Australorps are 6 weeks old and seem to defer completely to my 3 week old Barred Rocks, and even my 4 week old Silkies.

Aussies tend to be more docile than some breeds . Barred I have heard tend to be dominant over other breeds .Hens in general are more docile than Roos ...are the barred & silkies bigger than them ?

My australorp is near the bottom of the group. When i first put her in, she was at the very bottom for ages... even though she's much older and nearly twice the size of some of my birds! Shes worked her way up a little bit now, but still low down.

Actually, no. The Australorps at six weeks old are nearly twice as large as the younger chicks. I had been worried about putting the younger, smaller chicks in the coop with the older ones because I didn't want my little guys to get picked on. It turns out I had it backwards. One of the BR pullets is very calm and gets along well with the Australorps, often roosting right next to them, but my other BR pullet is really bossy. My little BR cockerel has actually been pretty friendly with everyone, and the Silkies are content to do their own thing until it's time to snuggle in for the night. Observing the dynamics of their interaction has been a real eye-opener.

Who needs TV when you have chickens?

My Australorp is true to her name-- Big Mama . She is definitely queen over my RIR and EE . They are the same age, about 20 weeks.

When my son dispersed our Australorps last year, I kept several of what I considered the best of the lot and now have restored a goodly number of them to the flock. I may have to come back to this thread to help get things livened up a bit.

I see my younger son made remarks that some might consider disparaging of the breed but that's his opinion, it has never been mine.
