Australorps breed Thread

We have solved the pecking order dilemma by only having Australorps! Their "pecking order" is punctuated by "Please" and "Thank you."

They're the best! Egg-laying machines and can be a meat bird if you want them to be. Hatchery stock may not have much meat on them, but my APA Aussie rooster is a HEAVY bird.

They're great mothers when they go broody (and they will, but not like a Silkie), kind and docile and sweet... They are a little shy at first, but warm up to you easily, especially when they associate you with food.

And the GREEN SHEEN!

The Australorp is indeed an excellent breed and for most people, keeping only one breed would make far more sense than so many folks seem to realize as it would indeed help keep peace in the yard. I keep a couple of breeds but they are compatible and get along fine together.

It came to me..."Show-Girl".

No pictures ?!

This is the best I could do running out the door to work! :)

We got 10 out of 11 eggs hatched! The 11th looked like it quit sometime around Day 18. She got off the nest for a few hours when we moved her, but settled in happily again when I placed her back on the nest. I was afraid she had been off for too long but crossed my fingers... And then there were 10. :D

More pics to come!

The other way to solve it is have similar temperament birds. All mine are fairly docile breeds, australorp, favorelles and silkies (and silkie cross). Our little australorp fits in nicely with them. I think the secret is to not throw a non docile breed into the mix.

This is my 5 week old pet Australorp, Peggy Sue. She is the friendliest of our 4 chickens. Do you guys think she looks like a hen? Really hoping this one isn't a roo! Thanks.

4 Chix,
The head shot looks like you have a pullet. At 7 or 8 weeks you will know for sure. Big pink red comb and wattles is a cockerel.

Mrsbrooke,
Congrats on the broody hatch. 10 for 11 is great, I would be pleased.
I am curious as to what you are calling an APA bird or APA eggs? Did you show the bird and win? I have never heard a bird called an APA bird or the eggs. Do you mean a bird that in your eyes conforms to the APA Standard of Perfection for an Australorp. I am seriously curious.
