Australorps breed Thread

Congrats ...
You might want to take out the chicks ....
so she continues to keep hatching .. she will eventually abandon the un hatched eggs .
Ours did that we had to incubate the 4 left ...2 were still good .
You can put them back with her after ..

A great point! I will see where we are when I get home. I'll remove them from her if she's still on the nest... MrB said there were SIX when he checked her during lunch, so she's still going strong! I'm really hoping the APA eggs will hatch!!

I wouldn't take them just yet. If they hatch within the day she may not leave. I have a buff orp hen that sits pretty still the entire first week. I'd give her a chance to let them all hatch.

Also a great point!

We've got the incubator humming if it looks like she's going to abandon the unhatched eggs. So far, she's doing great. (un)Fortunately, MrB's job site was rained out, so he can be at home with them and monitor their progress. :)

He waits for me to come home before any "official" chicken determinations are made! She's staying right where she is with her babies for now.

Our broody mama (from hatchery stock) has three new babies under her out of 11 eggs, so far. Had to leave to go to work, but she's in the broody box chatting away to her chicks. :) This is her first time and ours (for a broody), and so far, she is exceeding our expectations! We've got two APA eggs under her, so we're hoping they hatch out... One of them may not have been fertile. We shall see! Great job, mama. QUOTE] Hope you come home to a full nest of bubs! Very exciting :)

A work mate was trying to tell me that the australorp has black meat, I disagreed said he is thinking of a silkie. Please help clarify, Who is correct?
You are so right. There are black chickens that have black skin and black meat. And yes, Silkies do have dark skin and black meat. It is because a Silkies heart pumps the blood in reverse to other chicken. The other breed with dark skin and meat have a genetic defect.
