Australorps breed Thread

I did this short term for about 24 hours after I moved our silkie from their regular nesting box to a personal one in a separate pen. The first time she went broody I tried moving her she didn't settle and I gave up. The second time she went broody and I moved her I did this and then when I took it away the next day she was happy to stay on the new nest.

I don't think I've got the patience to maintain for the whole three weeks though :)

I'm getting a black Australorp soon and was just wondering, can I have a list of pros and cons of these breeds?!

Hmmm pros super friendly.

Cons super friendly (ever tried to take a photo of a chicken that insists on being under your feet)

Seriously though, we had a hatchery one years ago that was a great later and let my little kids cart it and it's isa brown sisters all over the place, up in the cubby, down the slide, even chased them out of the bedroom with it once! Was a great layer and never went broody and to be honest I don't remember egg production dropping due to winter or moulting.

This time we have a more show strain but it's not quite started laying so can't tell you how it goes on the egg and broody side.

Ok that's makes me happy

Goodness...I have never wanted chicks that badly. If they won't brood properly ..

Please forgive me for being so straight forward but this just seems like a colossal nuisance; for the hen and the flock master.

Sorry again.

Your Opinion is okay to hear

I suppose it could be a bother to some
I check on the Broodys anyway at least 2 times a day or more .I pet my favorite TT & talk to her...
Make sure she eats & drinks something
I take them out once or twice a day to stretch their legs & check the eggs.
I bought 6 eggs for her to set on & the guy gave me 10 ..Too many for her .
Shes tiny ..about 1/3 - 1/2 the size of the rest of the chickens ...she is a Sumatra ..she is on the right her last years baby is on the left
I too am little 5" 2 "

So I figure why waste a broody ? She ( Looney ) sets ... She Broods ..Just Fine ...on everyone's eggs ...LOL
and doesnt seem to care that she is netted in .
But she is too looney to go back to the right nest ..if she does get out of the nest .
Ive noticed a pattern in the last few days .. if I gather all the eggs she is more likely to go back to the right nest ...
So I have been closing her in at night only ..

Our broody mama (from hatchery stock) has three new babies under her out of 11 eggs, so far. Had to leave to go to work, but she's in the broody box chatting away to her chicks. :) This is her first time and ours (for a broody), and so far, she is exceeding our expectations!

We've got two APA eggs under her, so we're hoping they hatch out... One of them may not have been fertile.

We shall see!

Great job, mama. <3

Congrats ...
You might want to take out the chicks ....
so she continues to keep hatching .. she will eventually abandon the un hatched eggs .
Ours did that we had to incubate the 4 left ...2 were still good .
You can put them back with her after ..
