Some never get it I suppose ...This is Looney
Last year I got this Idea ...too late ..She lays on her eggs then when another hen lays she goes & sets on them .
Leaving the ones she set on for hours to get cold ..so she never hatched any ..
This Year Im fencing her in ...I take her out a couple times of day ..
But this way she stays on the right set of eggs .
Time will tell if she is a good mother ...if she isnt ..I am going to give them to the other hen ..if they survive or hatch

Goodness...I have never wanted chicks that badly. If they won't brood properly of their own free will then they aren't broody material, in my humble opinion.

Please forgive me for being so straight forward but this just seems like a colossal nuisance; for the hen and the flock master.

Sorry again.

I did this short term for about 24 hours after I moved our silkie from their regular nesting box to a personal one in a separate pen. The first time she went broody I tried moving her she didn't settle and I gave up. The second time she went broody and I moved her I did this and then when I took it away the next day she was happy to stay on the new nest. I don't think I've got the patience to maintain for the whole three weeks though :)

I think she ate another hens egg this morning, she's so young. I was worried she was not leaving the nest enough. I know it's short periods, however the 5 min she was off I ran out to check clutch. There was egg yolk but all eggs. That's the first time I have seen her off of the nest. I'm debating getting her out for a few minutes but don't want to disturb her to much and have her abandon clutch.

She's sounding less and less like good broody hen material. Is there a reason you are persevering with her rather than just waiting for a better broody?

Cracrazy,
Did you candle yet?

MrsB,
That is definitely a good looking bunch.
I just had the WV NPIP guy here on Tuesday and
every thing is good to go this year again.

OOps ! sent it too quickly .

Started w/30 eggs. 1 - damaged in shipment, 2 w / hairline cracks. So I set 29 eggs and 21 are growing strong !

If I can get them all to lock down, I'll be happily swimming in Aussies
