Australorps breed Thread

Yes, but better to not have the issue to start with if you have a choice and know to think ahead about such things (which I did not). Unless you REALLY want that bird with a huge comb, think twice. I understand Vaseline/Bag Balm, etc can HELP but only to a point so it depends on how cold your area gets.

It doesn't get SUPER cold, just pretty cold

All relative!

Your avatar info doesn't say where you are. When I was growing up in L.A. 50 F was COLD. Anything lower was REALLY COLD. I've lived in VT for over 30 years. 50 F is only cold if it is July/August. Super cold is -40 F, Really cold is -20 F, Pretty cold is 0 F, 20 F is Cool and in Jan/Feb if it is anywhere near freezing, it is a heat wave

Quote: Hi Ron. Often chuckle watching the hens taking dust baths. They enjoy it enormously and have some strange moves that are humorous to watch. Your girls are very pretty. Enjoyed your pic. Can't wait to get some of my own soon. ~Dee~

haha! I'm in west TN. I live about an hour from Memphis, which is really helpful because I'm only an hour and 15 minutes from Lebounuer, I have an aneurism on my kidney, and I may have to have surgery. 40 degrees is cool here right now, if it gets down to 0 or lower, that'll be super cold.

I noticed the first posting of this thread mentioned blue and splash Australorps. Does anyone have those? If so, can you post pics? I thought Aussies only came in black.

I need to do more research.

Other colors are small projects. Personally have never seen other than black( I have a white hen) but Hupp Poultry Farm has blues.

Black is the only color accepted by the APA. Blue, is accepted in other countries, as well as white, maybe chocolate I think? There are a few people working to get blue accepted here, but it is a long, hard road....stan

Why are we talking about a dozen different breeds on this thread? I thought this was the australorp breed thread. We have enough problems trying to breed something close to SOP with our Australorps. Almost everybody starts out with a bunch of different breeds and that is ok if you want a lot of color running around in your backyard but that is not helping any breed, just the propagators selling eggs or chicks. To even attempt to breed close to SOP you cannot handle more than one or two breeds, unless you have alot of money and space for a whole lot of coops, and pens. If you are trying to figure out what breed you like best then do alot of research first and then pick your two favorites. Otherwise, what will you do with the half a dozen other breeds that you bought when you don't like them for one reason or another? Breeding requires chicks on the ground, different rooster hen combinations and alot of culling. If all you want is alot of different breeds then so be it, but I guarantee you will be disappointed in their individually production and maintenance compared to each other. That is why I say do alot of research first!
