Australorps breed Thread

Why are we talking about a dozen different breeds on this thread? I thought this was the australorp breed thread. We have enough problems trying to breed something close to SOP with our Australorps. Almost everybody starts out with a bunch of different breeds and that is ok if you want a lot of color running around in your backyard but that is not helping any breed, just the propagators selling eggs or chicks. To even attempt to breed close to SOP you cannot handle more than one or two breeds, unless you have alot of money and space for a whole lot of coops, and pens. If you are trying to figure out what breed you like best then do alot of research first and then pick your two favorites. Otherwise, what will you do with the half a dozen other breeds that you bought when you don't like them for one reason or another? Breeding requires chicks on the ground, different rooster hen combinations and alot of culling. If all you want is alot of different breeds then so be it, but I guarantee you will be disappointed in their individually production and maintenance compared to each other. That is why I say do alot of research first!

I just went back a couple of days and it was all BAs.

I was referring to page 197. I'm ordering this and that, what do you think about this breed and that. The point I was trying to make is that this is not the right thread for what breed do you think I should get in the spring and that's all. Apparently, my bad! That is a good point!

Next time I will suggest going to the Breed section and starting a thread there. For that post, I did not reply because I do not know enough about all those breeds. I was going to post to get a bunch of BAs and skip the others.

BYC is a tough forum to figure out. There are a lot of sections with different things to talk about I them. Here we all love BAs so we may not be as objective.

I could put up with a little of it if we had more of a constant discussion of australorps breeding, genetics, showing, and all things australorp. I don't mind a newbie asking questions, but Ron has a good idea to refer them out after trying to enlist them in our breed.

In short, I'd like to see more participation from BA breeders on a more regular basis. We are going to have those who are just here to have fun and who want to keep a Noah's Ark of poultry dropping in from time to time. Let's just head them in the right direction. But let's have more meaty discussions about our breed. Sometimes several days go by without a post from anyone. Many of you can teach what more of us need to learn.

Here are some pics of my BA flock. They arrived around Sept 18th. I ordered a stright run of 30 from MM Hatchery. They sent 32 one died on the 3rd day(pullet) and I lost one to a hawk on Thanksgiving morning(cockerel). That left me with 14 pullets and 16 cockerels. Processed 14 cockerels the past couple weeks. Now the waiting game for eggs.
I know its hatchery stock so don't flame me too bad.





Could only get three pics to load. These are the two cockerels I kept and a pic of a pullet. I have some better looking pullets if anyone can guide me to get more pics loaded.

That's the same day my 8 pullets were hatched and your girl looks just like mine. That makes me feel really good. I know I need to get some pics of my girls and get them online.

Welcome to the thread Tater,
the folk on here love their BA's and generally offer positive comments, so don't worry about being flamed. We all get a little nervous about what folk will say about our birds when we put them up for scrutiny. Most of us start out with Utility/hatchery birds and some get hooked and start to crave the Exhibition type. Even here where the latter are freely available, I started out with Utility strains. They're terrific layers and generally have a good temperament. The problem is that many hatcheries sell non-purebred Utility BA's. They have often been mixed with other breeds. The legs and feet are often a simple way of telling. A purebred BA should have black or slate gray legs (not blue and certainly not yellow!). It should have white toenails and the soles of the feet should also be white, perhaps with a little black spotting. You learn when taking pics for posting here just how many ducks, stretches, crouches, bobs etc a chook can achieve in the photographic moment! Cockerel 2 seems to have struck his 'imitation of a gamebird' pose. Look forward to more pics. When culling BA cockerels, be very harsh on any bird with a tail approaching vertical or beyond (squirrel-tail). Breeders here stress correct conformation/shape (see my avatar) as top priority when selecting breeding stock. From what I can pick up, your girls may be a bit better than your boys and the females tend to have more influence on conformation of their young. Enjoy your BA experience, Tater.
