Australorps breed Thread

My BA started making very strange sounds the other day.
Today, for the first time, we heard the famous egg song
several times throughout the day. I went out several times
to check around the coop and haven't seen any egg yet.
Can anyone tell me when we might start having an egg
to go along with the song? Thanks,

When they start practicing the egg song they are very close. I had one do that to me too and no egg. The next day there was an egg.

Should be soon!

Hi Everyone I have been lurking here for a while ..Thought I d say Hello .
We have a Austalorp Roo ..Non hatchery I believe Lucky is his name ..Named by my husband coz he has 8 ladies to choose from .
Our ladies are 1 RIR 8 red Sexlinks / Comets

The white tail you see is a second generation comet ..I believe .As a chick she was sexed a red female ..Turned out white .
We thought she would lay white eggs ..thought she wasnt laying for a while as all we got were brown eggs . Turns out she lays brown eggs also .
Has anyone ever crossed a RIR with a Australorp ? I am hoping for 1 broody in the spring

That is a nice egg laying collection..I dont cross breed like that ..but some people do..

Just got one big girl recently and she has blessed me with big, the occasional double yolker, eggs a day. I have not named her yet any good name suggestions out there. I will have to go take a few pictures of her.

We got the chickens primarily for laying eggs
We Got the Australorp Roo purely by chance . We lost a baby roo & Pullet when they were young to a fox .
They had 2 flocks . 4 older hens <--given to us & 4 pullets we raised from chicks . We were hoping a rooster could blend them some .
We went to the N Y State fair & came back with a rooster .. . He won 2nd place in his division ..He rode the bus home with us to our car parked at park & ride ..LOL We are very happy with him . We now have one flock & a very alert rooster to watch our flock .
We had a eagle checking out our flock last week ..He had them all huddled with him ..watching the eagle

They are a wonderful egg layer and very reliable winter layer..I have had just about every breed over the years... the australorps have been one of the best..I have always been real happy with them..

I went out and took a couple pics of my good hens ..The few I have left...I have been working at home so when I take a break I go out with them..its very cold today so they are getting away from the rooster on the rock wall..

This is buttercup..I have had a terrible time getting a fertile egg out of her..finnaly this year I found one with a bullseye..so have 9 in the incubator right now..Shes retired now, won her awards just trying to get some fertile eggs out of her..People ask me for some but I couldnt say yes, I was afraid they might get infertile eggs..in the past we got some really nice chicks out of her..I gave them to 4hers from here to LA.. I gave them away hoping that people would just enjoy them..Shes a little rooster rough.

You can see her nice comb here

The girls sunning themselves and hiding from the rooster

This hen is getting ready to molt so she is a little pale all over and the rooster really roughed up her tail.

juliet oh juliet...he hates it when they sit up on the rock wall

Supposedly a ranch store had Australorps, but when I got there, there weren't any! Now I have to wait till April 25th unless another store gets them.
