Australorps breed Thread

I'm about a hour & twenty minutes northeast of Syracuse. Last fall I entered my 2 Blue Bantam Cochin pullets in the show at the fairgrounds. I hatched them in March. It was fun ! But, I get goosebumps when I see the big beautiful Aussies.

I have a lot of work ahead of me with my birds, but I'm definetly hooked on the breed.

I currently show Rottweilers...................... can you see a theme here

BOB is "Big Ole Bird" It is a supplement. Ron Ott talks about it. Maybe he will chime in here. That's where I heard of it.

My Grand Dad used to eat a 1/2 dozen eggs a day. Eggs for breakfast and egg sandwiches for lunch. Maybe that's why he lived to be 94.

Here are a few pics Not much to see just yet..But coming along..several aussies, a couple english import orps and more of those on the way...and blk orp from my back yard..there are only 3 of those.Just having the time of my life here..waiting to see what shapes up for fall shows..My relaxing fall fun. Its work..but happy work. I stil wish there were a magic wand you could wave and have it say boy girl boy boy whos who in there..guess I will find out soon enough..we go through this every year, the blk orps were bred with slightly lower comb, makes it even harder with those..one year I thought, look at me with all my blk orp pullets...nope 5 Ks and 1 Pullet..
Had them outside for an hour today in the sun..it was really nice in the afternoon..but when the wind picked up..back in

Wow! They are coming along nicely... great to see your cute chick pics. Thanks for posting these. I just cannot wait to get mine.

At what age do BA chicks safely use a perch? We have one in my brooder set up but read today some breeds can get a deformed keel from using one before 6 weeks. I am thinking of removing it now. Wondering what you all think about it? TIA ~Dee~

It is a pro biotic with Humic acid. Southland Organics have a bunch of research on it and it:

Helps them Grow faster
less chick death
harder egg shells
bigger and more eggs

2 tsp per gallon for 2 days every 15 days.

It does do what it claims too.

.that is true about the keel especially if they get crowded on it so I put a big log chunk in there..they can climb around and flap their wings To get up on it.it's too wide to cause damage lot of them prefer to sleep beside it....I took the log out of there to take a couple pics..it has up until today been very cold outside so had to keep them in..but setting up the a frame with heat lamp tomorrow..we have weasels here so swopping the a frame chicken wire for weasel proof wire..

4 chicks..I do see a theme there LOL.. Australorps are classy birds for sure..I'm way down here on border of pa..

Great idea. I'll switch it out for sure. We have some nice 4x4 Douglas fir non treated wood in the garage that should be great to "climb around and flap their wings". I think that is one of the cutest things about watching chick TV. lol Their precious little wings are so small fluttering away.

How soon do you expose your chicks to the ground? The sooner the better or later? I've heard it helps build immunity and some even place a plug of sod in the brooder for them to peck on at a week old. Wondering what you believe is good for them? TIA ~Dee~

I started my almost 3 yr. old Barr Rock hen on BOB a month ago. She is on her second dose now. The first time I presented it to her she guzzled it up like she was craving it. I am curious to see what it will do for my favorite old girl long term as well as my future BA chicks. Betsy was laying fairly well before using it but it does seem to us her eggs are getting bigger. I mean now I have trouble closing the egg carton lid on over them.
Ron, you told me it makes the water black but it was rather shocking I must say when I first saw how really black it is. lol Almost the color of really old oil. I sort of thought she may not drink it but even my picky girl Betsy didn't even hesitate. She seems to enjoy it. Thanks again for the tip.

Your welcome Dee! I was telling the egg farmer that I am working with about it today and told him the same thing--the chickens gobble it up each time I give it to them.

For something that is not very expensive it really does a lot for their health. It even makes my Hatchery RIRs shiny
