Im wondering what the answer is for that..My cousin has cert organic farm..they raise some chickens no medicated anything and never a problem, maybe its some of the breeds they raise, not sure..very clean environment, 200 acres lot of outdoor , they feed all certified organic feeds.move chicken tractors around every day...I think they select a bit for immunity..I know the birds with mediteranian blood are most part immune to Mereks ..they carry a B factor in thier blood..I do combo but I think as Vickie says..keeping them clean of parasite load and good feed so I do use commercial wormers , but prefer to find feeds that are very low in soybean..soybean is a natural hormone in medical feild causes very young girls as young as 6 yrs old to begin menstration and breast development..for a long time they couldnt figure out why this was happening..then med research found that the soybean mimics natural hormones produced in the body ..they began adding it to cerals, and lot of store shelf food..may play a role in breast cancers ect..but not been proven..it is suspected as it would be hormone overload..

The Organic folks use Lacto bacillus based pro biotics in both feed and they is a liquid that they make to treat the litter and the ground. Yes, resistance is important. A lot of the imports do not have much resistance so they would not be used. There are a couple of wormers that are organic.

Interestingly the people on the low soy diet do not care about the Organic part. If there were a medicated non soy feed it would be fine for them to use is.

If you do not eat soy, you can taste it in the eggs.

The current recommendation from the experts here is to use Wazine first and then 10 to 14 days later use Valbazen.

Fecal float tests cost $10.50 here....I test first now but will likely treat the young ones first.

Ivermectin still works for me.

Wazine first..lighter for babies...then goat wormer..Dragon lady can give details on that.

Ron your right..I have some brit imports..they have low resistance to things that other birds are not bothered by..They have never been exposed to certian things common here..simple fungus that has no affect on SOP birds can be devastating to imports..found that out..it isnt true for all of the imports, some are little more robust maybe less inbred not sure..especially when on medicated feed..imports can break out with fungal infections..seems longer the line is here the better it gets..the brit buffs have no problems with anything

Exactly! In all honesty & on a personal note, due to my extreme health issues it is mandatory I avoid non organic food for personal consumption. Therefore, now I am learning how to raise my chickens as "clean" as possible so the eggs are edible for my personal use. I need to raise them without medications or chemicals as much as possible. Our acreage is very green and clean year around compared to most areas. Also with a cap of four birds which is a super small scale, so hopefully with my diligence I can keep everything clean enough that I won't have too many issues to address. I just want to be prepared so if something goes wrong I am not caught off guard. I do not want to treat healthy birds unnecessarily but I don't want to be stupid about it. I have been weighing my options as carefully as I can. I do appreciate everyone's comments in making my decisions. In my past raising chickens and hogs I always used medicated feeds with no question. Things are not simple these days. ~Dee~

I have read on another thread about using Shaklee Basic H soap as a wormer. The contributor copied part of a book by Joel Salatin (Polyface Farm). Mr. Salatin's idea was that it took the protective coating off of the parasite allowing the natural body's acids to kill the worm. I think it was the "natural Chicken Keepers" thread.

Ron, How do you use Ivermectin? I have some Ivomec I use for heartworm preventative on my dogs. Have for many years.
