Australorps breed Thread

I hatched two Black Penedesencas on Friday. I put them into the brooder with the week old Australorps and one of the Pene chicks thinks that the big blue Australorp is its mother! It chirps and then runs to sit under the Australorp chick!

It was very cute but I have moved the Penes to their own brooder for now.

Sounds so adorable. How could you rob the Pene from this pseudo motherly comfort. lol
Looking forward to more pics...

Quote: Hi John. Sounds perfect to me. (fun plus tick removal) I have a dog like that. I keep her on the other side of the fence from my chickens at all times. lol So what I am wondering really is which BA's will end up to be your best egg layers along with being your healthiest birds of course. Will you be able to clearly see differences or not? Probably some from each batch will out shine others is my guess but I am curious if that will be true or not. If it turns out the birds from SQ breeders turn out to be superior egg layers and the healthiest overall it would be worth it for me to set this for my next BA goal. Otherwise the hatchery BA will meet my needs. I will try to remember to ask you a year from now. lol I better make a note of it and hope I don't lose my note.

Quote: It seems like you were correct! I was worried that the little penes would be crushed by the big Australorps but the little penes were chirping up a storm tonight. They had water and food. They had been eating and drinking. There vents were clear with no pasty butt. I gave them a drop of baby vitamins without iron and they were still chirping up a storm. I gave in and moved them back in with the Australorps.

One of them ran straight for the big blue one and the other ran up to them and went under a black one. No more loud chirping. I guess they missed their one week old adoptive "mothers".

Do you think I am going to have a broody problem one day?

Hello everyone,
I have been catching up on everyone's posts. Been interesting to read. I have some hatchery BA's and some of Urch's line too. Their is a big difference in size and laying as well. At least with mine that is. The hatchery ones lay a smaller size egg and only 4 eggs a week. While my SQ ones lay an extra large egg and I am getting 5-7 eggs a week per hen, these do grow a little slower but I didn't push them either. I am looking for longevity as layers plus broody's. I have found that mine don't go broody until their 2nd year.

Im hoping o get some pics pretty soon..the weather has been horrible, rain and cold still..the babies are out in A frame heated but I had to cover it to keep the chill out of the run..supposed to be nice next week..It looks like there might be a real sharp little pullet in there..watching her pretty close for fall shows..time will tell..
