you talking about BA's here Ron?Yes, they are very good steady egg layers and will not usually blow out their egg laying organs.

I was replying to the topic of BAs and laying earlier than average for them--less than 22 or so weeks. The comparison is with Leghorns(commercial) and red hybrids. Both start on average at 16 to 20 weeks and have a lot of egg laying problems.
When you cross them, do you use an Australorp roo or hen ?
I crossed Hatchery quality BAs with Hatchery Quality Silver Dorkings and wow! Great growth and tasty meat on the Cockerels. I did not get pullets from that cross though.I use an Australorp rooster over a Dark Cornish hen. All the chicks come out black and grow away fast. The resulting pullets lay around 200 very good size eggs a year and are first class broodies and good mothers. The rooster dress out around 6lbs at 25 weeks on a grain and free range diet.
They are fairly tight feathered and will stand wet and windy conditions very well. They are good foragers and sibling mated you will get these in the f2.

Again the resulting pullets are very good layers and broodies.

She looks promising. My suggestion would be to breed her to a black in order for the lacing to start really showing through in the next generation. It is very important when breeding blue to cross back to black at least every couple generations.
