you talking about BA's here Ron? :)
I was replying to the topic of BAs and laying earlier than average for them--less than 22 or so weeks. The comparison is with Leghorns(commercial) and red hybrids. Both start on average at 16 to 20 weeks and have a lot of egg laying problems.

The egg laying problems come from the large number of eggs Leghorns and Hybrids lay in a year and not from starting early.

When you cross them, do you use an Australorp roo or hen ?

I use an Australorp rooster over a Dark Cornish hen. All the chicks come out black and grow away fast. The resulting pullets lay around 200 very good size eggs a year and are first class broodies and good mothers. The rooster dress out around 6lbs at 25 weeks on a grain and free range diet.
They are fairly tight feathered and will stand wet and windy conditions very well. They are good foragers and sibling mated you will get these in the f2.

Again the resulting pullets are very good layers and broodies.

I crossed Hatchery quality BAs with Hatchery Quality Silver Dorkings and wow! Great growth and tasty meat on the Cockerels. I did not get pullets from that cross though.

What color is the skin?

Hi everyone,
Thought I would post something as I am always reading the thread but rarely posting.
I set 20 blue and black Australorp eggs in my Incubator yesterday so looking forward to hatch day.
I will post some pics of my lorps when they hatch and I can even post pics of their development every few weeks if you like as I know some of you are very keen on blues.
I love everyone's blue and splash Australorps. Great seeing your pics.

I pulled the Blue girl out of the Tractor Brooder and weighed her this morning. She weighs 4pounds 6 ounces at 19 weeks old. I can't weigh the boys because they are at the egg farm but my guess is that they weigh at least 2 pounds more.

Blue girl last week:

They also have nice width to them.
She looks promising. My suggestion would be to breed her to a black in order for the lacing to start really showing through in the next generation. It is very important when breeding blue to cross back to black at least every couple generations.

Thank You.

I wondered when I would need to breed back to black. I will be breeding them when they start laying.
