Australorps breed Thread

My birds are almost done moulting and will hopefully start laying again soon. I wanted to show off my Tigercreek birds. I had a fox kill a pullet about a month ago that really bummed me out. I still have two really nice pullets though and one of the cockerels is coming along nicely. I'm still holding out hope for the other cockerel (bottom photo).

Very nice! So glad you posted pics of your Aussies from Stan. ~Dee~

I gave my chickens a pumpkin yesterday. It took them a while to figure out what to do. Of course Sienna, my Hatchery Australorp from Cackle Hatchery figured it out first:

Please share why you made the port hole instead of just splitting it in half. Knowing you I just think you had a good reason for it and I want to learn it. I need to get a pumpkin. They don't grow so well here as it is so wet and cold. Not impossible but a lot of care to do it. We usually do a mound of zucchini but the wet and cold climate just turned them into moldy goo this year. So disappointing. Rather odd that we had some good cucumbers though and the girls went bonkers over them. All they left was a skin shell each time. They are eating Braeburn & Fuji apples now-a-days. ~Dee~

Just took 12 week picks of my little flock. Here's my BA. Love her. She is the easiest to pick up and cuddle. The bravest about new things. And the boldest - when we transitioned a 7 month old SLW into the flock this past weekend, Ebony was the only one who didn't run from her. Wasn't gonna start a fight or get picked on but also quietly stood her ground.

I like to put them to work--so they do not get bored. They will spend a couple of days getting into the pumpkin and will eventually open it all the way up.

This pumpkin was too big though--It rolled too easily so I cut it in half for them. Later I will get them a couple of smaller pumpkins and let them work on the hole again.

Ebony is a cutie. I enjoyed your pics and story about her very much. Nice trio in the last pic. I have a Barr Rock too. She is molting right now and looks very ragged. LOL
My two Aussies follow me around the paddock everyday while I am doing my clean up chores. I have an old plastic table in there for me to put down my egg basket, feed, treats, water, etc. They hop up there to see what I have for them. I get a big kick out of it so most always have something for them. Gives me a chance to daily inspect them close up to make sure they are healthy, etc.

The trio is called "The Big Three" by my older daughter. Not because of size but because they were the surviving 3 out of 4 chicks we got from Meyer Hatchery. We've since added a English Orp who is 3 days younger and a Wyandotte who is 4 months older. But these remain The Big Three. They are pretty bonded but not to the exclusion of the others.

Hi All,
I have what I call " the bachelor pad " where all the randy boys hang together ( the girls were very thankful !! ) These boys are about 6 months old. What should I be feeding them? Currently they are on 27% gamebird starter. Should I continue with this? I want them to have a good start because I'll be picking a keeper out of this group. It's also starting to get cold here and I want them ready for winter.......................... and freezer camp !

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
