Australorps breed Thread

I'm just wondering: I have one Black Australorp in my flock and from what I've read, are really good layers. She is about 22 weeks old. Should I expect an egg from her any day, now, or do they tend to start a little older, than average? I've noticed her laying down outside in their run, often, but she doesn't squat, when I reach for her, yet.

I am glad somebody is getting eggs because half of mine are molting now which means only half are laying. I cut back to 24 birds now and five are cockerels or cocks depending on their age. I probably will not start breeding till this winter for the spring.

I have 12 pullets and the past few weeks I have been getting 43 up to 50 eggs. I have been pleasantly surprised!

She is at the correct age but unless there are supplemental lights, they will take a bit longer to start.

25 to 27 weeks.

The "HME" is over 3 1/2 inches long and is next to a 72 g BA egg from her sister in the same pen. It is just the flash from the camera, check the last pic.

Oh my gosh! That is a whopper! Your poor girl. Hope she didn't hurt herself laying it. Looks to be over 3" tall & about 2" wide... is amazing she was successful laying it. Ouch! LOL ~Dee~

Got my first egg from Cookie today, 24 wks old.
Congrats! Mine have been laying every day since they started in Sept.at around 22 weeks old the size you have there in the pic but lately have increased in size. Sure do enjoy their yummy eggs. ~Dee~

I've gotten 6 eggs out of my 4 girls this week, they are all first time layers this week. Cute and tiny eggs, I think I will admire them for a day or so before eating them. I've been waiting what feels like forever for them to start! :)
