Australorps breed Thread

When would be a good time of the year to try to leave the golf balls in the nest?

Now to springtime ...you can also buy fake ceramic eggs to leave in the nest ..
Ive had some fun with those ...
They look so real ...I have collected them ...& one even went in a egg carton that I sold LOL

I buy the empty plastic eggs, put a little sand in them to give them some weight and super glue them together. I just bought 12 for .99. They come in all colors ! my girls don't care about the color they just want something to sit on. I also use them to show the young girls where to lay.

Have you danced yet? They lay such large gorgeous eggs.

Mornin' everyone
Thought I would pop out of hiding and say hi. A lovely -26 F without the windchill this morning so I am in no hurry to go outside. My 3 young lady Aussies from Cackle Hatchery are doing great and developing nicely. If you remember I ordered 5 pullets on the very expensive "backyard special" (because of shipping) and wound up with 4 and 1. My neighbor has the 4th hen and the +1 and he appears to be developing nicely as well. My girls are soon to be 10 months and are laying tho the eggs are still a bit small. I will try to post some conformation photos as soon as it warms up enough outside that my camera won't freeze.

-26F !!!!! Whoa! So, would it be cruel if I told you it's supposed to be around 80 degrees here today?
I'm glad to hear your new Aussies are doing so well! Getting any eggs at all when it's that cold is something to celebrate.

Hi All! I just inherited a small flock of Australorps (1 roo, 5 hens) from my boss, the survivors of a visit from neighbor dogs. Lovely birds! Much safer at my place it sounds. Look forward to reading this thread and getting to know more about them. Funny you call them Aussies, I have Australian Shepherds (Aussies) so I'll try not to get too confused!

DesertChic, it's fine for you to gloat about your current temps.

I'll be sure to point out to you when the temp tops out at 74*F to 80*F in July and August during mid-afternoon and a medium to heavy quilt feels pretty good at bedtime.

I don't remember the last time we used air conditioning...
