Australorps breed Thread

I might add a little more protein to their diets, but that's me. I understand we are at the mercy of our feed stores!!!

On an unrelated note, I'd skip the Greek yogurt. Mammals are better suited for digesting dairy products... A bird has no need for milk and lacks certain enzymes to break it down. A little yogurt now and again is okay-ish, but I'd switch to fermenting their feed or offering chick pro-biotics in their water if you want that good gut flora. :)

Also, x2 on looking like pullets.

Did you know that oats actually feed good gut bacteria doing a better job in humans than probiotics because they help our gut build up and maintain it's own large colony of good bacteria. The introduced pro biotics only live a short while as they have nothing to live on without something to feed on.

Makes me wonder if the same applies to the chicken gut and if we would be better off feeding them porridge than yoghurt or probiotics.

Now THAT'S interesting!

I actually stopped feeding my chickens yogurt and instead only use the whey from the yogurt to add probiotics to my fermented feed. I've only occasionally added oats to their feed, but I might have to start doing that more often.

I can see how that would work in birds, since they have a gizzard and are able to break down the oats more effectively than we can. Same with cows and other ruminants with multiple stomachs that chew their food over and over.

It is my personal belief that humans were never designed to eat mass quantities of grains (wheat, oats, corn, rice, barley, rye, et. al.), because of the ANTI-nutrients that appear when we digest them (lectin, gluten, phytates).

It's a very solid piece of advice for bird health! In my case, though, I'll stick to sauerkraut and kimchi for my gut bacteria. <3
