Australorps breed Thread

So my "gals" are 3 weeks old, any guesses on gender? All three have combs coming in, but hopefully they're girls - not allowed roosters here! Also an excuse to show off my cutie patooties hahaha Also, when abouts do y'all think would be good to let them outside? I'm planning on around 5 weeks, it's in the high 50's during the day but still dropping to the 30's at night and I don't want there to be too big a shock with temp change from indoors at 68 lol

Wait until they are 6 to 7 weeks old and fully feathered.

Did you buy pullets? If so, they are likely pullets(except that one in front has red in the comb and big legs...)

It's supposed to be in the 20s tomorrow. It was in the 80s and windy today, with no sunshine. Just grey skies and humidity. I can't wait for warm weather and sunshine!

Took the eggs off of the turner today, hatch expected Saturday. Hoping all eight come on out.

Thanks, guys! Looking at them in person the front one isn't as red comparatively, so here's hoping! And no, bought them as chicks with a "90% accuracy" dealio so hoping hens but if it's a rooster, such is life haha

So excited to say I finally have 2 australorp babies! They are now a tad over a week. I have wanted australorps since I wanted chickens! My local TSC finally had them this year. I only have 2 so hoping they are both girls! Please please please!!!!

Vent sexing from a hatchery is about 90% accurate.

eight australorp eggs in the incubator ... hatch day is the 18th ... getting to know the breed ... 11 pullets nearing point of lay ... got four eggs one of the days about a month ago then I turned off the light and eggs disappeared .... checked the internet for daylight and we will have 14 hours soon

Hello from Washington, Australorpers! I must chime in and say that I've been very happy with my Australorp chick. She's big and plump and very quiet and calm. Which is great because the Marans and Wyandotte in my mixed flock are pretty active and loud. I can plop her on my lap and stroke her back and she will just sit there. She's so calm she's almost boring. Does not squabble for treats, doesn't protest or run away when I try to pick her up, I'll take it! I understand that this temperament is the norm for Australorps?

Am I correct in this? Australorps lay a large light brown egg at around 20 weeks?

You are correct: they do lay a large light brown egg. It could be anywhere from 18-22 weeks and don't be surprised if they start out a little smaller. Sometimes pullet eggs start small and start to get larger once they've really matured.

Yes
they are calm birds ...one thing to watch for in a mixed flock with Aussies is that they may be at the bottom of the pecking order ...
so make sure they get enough food ...just check their crop once in a while ..
eggs will start small & work their way up ...if they start earlier ...if they start later may be a little bigger

could be the light ...could be they are hiding them ...sometimes new layers lay them everywhere ...
