Australorps breed Thread

Hello all. I have 3 astrolorps, 2 jersey giants, 2 polish, an Easter egger and one bantam Wyandotte. They (for the most part) all get along. At first the bantam tried to bully but these little girls (about 7 months old) quicklystood up for themselves against all the others (they are about 3 years old). All is pretty quiet with no more bullying. After about 6 months of no eggs they are slowly starting as the little ones have begun. Actually I know these were supposed to be "pure astrolorps " but they are almost as big as my giants - and those pigs are huge.]

I've raised both and sometimes at the same time. They act similar but the BO were not as great of egg layers as my Australorps. What do you mean by best way to source Australorp eggs when I have a broody hen.

What I was trying to ask is, what is the best source for fertile Australorp when I have a broody hen ready to sit?

I get all of my chickens from a local hatchery in Idaho called Dunlap Hatchery. McMurray I'm sure is a great source as well. Never got anything from them but I've heard great things about them.

I get it, apparently Birdrain does not. You are asking where to get Aussie eggs when your hen goes broody. That all depends on where you live.

I'm just curious on why other people's chickens are molting while my chickens never molt this time of year. I know my Australorps are too young to even molt right now but even in the past 12 years my chickens molt in July or August.

There could be a lot of reasons but I would suspect it has to do with your latitude. You are up pretty far north.

Only one of my chickens, one of my four Australorps, molted in July/August. The rest of my birds are molting now. I'm not sure if it's because our winters are so much more mild or what, but my poor birds look horrible and half naked, and we're about to have another cold snap.

Sometimes I will when my egg production takes a drop. Luckily though this year my girls are still laying very well.
