Australorps breed Thread

The Australorp is the descendant of the Orpington. The standards get pretty close.
The weight and shape are big differences though. Sadly, the curves of the Australorp are being lost due to judging them like Orpingtons.

Remember, they are a large part Langshan--that really changes the way they look.

Thanks Ron. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking the same thing. I can't imagine him not being able to mate with his own hens, if they are all raised close to standard. I hear a lot of complaining about the judges wanting big Australorps, but we have some good judges down here that know the weight standards, and don't like them to be too big, lacking curvature, having too much cushion, and looking like Orphingtons.

Up here they want them plump, I mean PLUMP. Mine aren't fat, t are just big bodied. I don't know if he weighed 12 I keep thinking it was around 10-11, anyways he is with the hens, but he is getting older, and so are the hens. So he has tried to mate, but not succecful enough to do the job naturally.

Here are the updated photos of my "babies" As you can see they are more green than black, even in the shade.

Blackie

and Tonio

They were 20 weeks old on Saturday.

THis is what ours are supposed to look like so will see how the tails end up as they age. I suspect Blackie will be a better shape than Tonio, as they are quite different. Tonio is the one I thought would be a rooster and still stands very upright.

Pepper did end up less flat across the back and tail so these girls may too hopefully.

Lol. They are large fowl. Will have to weight the fully grown one one day. Know you pick up the faverolles and then pick her up and she is like a sack of potatoes in comparison lol
