Australorps breed Thread

Hello everyone! So I have some baby black australaorps I got at the local tractor supply. And just thought I'd join in on the fun in here.

Here is a pic of my little buggers.

They are the friendliest chicks I've ever had. I bought 10 the day they came in and one unfortunately died that first night. But the 9 I have left are healthy happy little chicks.

I have no idea on sexes yet but going by personalities so far I think I have 3 roos and 6 hens. But I guess time will just have to tell.

I also have some buff Orpingtons in a day makeshift incubator. Do you all think they can be kept in the same brood box or will I need another due to the difference in age?

You can do that but you need a chicken wire divider in between for a couple weeks until they get to know and see one another then after introducing them there should be real easy integration. Here's a couple of pics from my attempt,

it was very successful.

I started incubating the eggs around the same day I got the day old chicks. So when/if they hatch I'm looking at around 3 weeks difference.

I have decided to stop hatching BA's. I think I have around 60 of the little buggers now. They are the cutest chicks and so curious. I find they calm down the CLB's when I have them together. The BA is one of the best all round chickens in my humble opinion. The only problem I have with them is the comb in our unforgivingly cold winters.

So I do not know if I have mentioned it here, but I am working on making a pea comb BA. I am on my 4th generation. However, at this point I am not making many of them until I get them perfected. It started as an accident. I had a BA rooster that mated with a black EE hen I had. The chick looked a lot like the BA but with a pea comb and of course a lot smaller.

Right now I still have the pea comb, ( I do have to select for the pea comb though). I have the eggs back to the right color (maybe even a tad darker than the BA). The size needs to come up a little. But they are looking really good. I know most of you are SOP breeders and I do that too, but I like trying to change them too. Just wondering if any of you have tried working on changing the comb?

I forgot to mention 2 of the BA's are getting a job this week at 4 days old! They will be teachers for my Turkeys hatching tomorrow. Turkeys are so stupid they need a chick to teach them to eat and drink. So two get that job! Poor pay and long hours for them.
