Australorps breed Thread

Peepers showing off her sheen. Gonna keep an eye out for that egg. I am wondering why the color of her comb and wattles isnt very deep red. Too old for attracting male attention? None of my rooster went after her once she was introduced to the yard.

Here she is again. She is such a cute diminutive thing.

she is probably too young to lay yet ...roosters will know when she is ready..unless they are young then...
they dont care what the age

Oh ok. So my prices arent ridiculous but i should consider lowering them a bit
perhaps till you are situated with amounts available, you could lower a tad then see where you're at 6 months and a yr from now. Location and desire are the most important thing to get you most business

This chicken will not lay white eggs. Chickens with red earlobes like this lay brown eggs (australorps and black sex links combined). Chickens that lay white eggs have white earlobes.

My guess on this one is that she is not yet old enough to be laying, which is why her comb is not red and the boys are disinterested. I also learned that chickens with a lot of black on the face/comb like this have 'gypsy face,' it is just a name for being very pigmented.

Well she has not laid an egg yet but the previous owner said she got her and her "sisters" March 2015 and that she lays small white eggs. Her sisters are all standard variety chickens that lay large eggs. I took two and my friend took two in a rehoming situation. The other one I took is an EE and is supposed to lay medium size green eggs. No eggs from her either but perhaps they have toget used to the new environment. I am concerned about the darn comb on this one though.

Here they are sharing a treat together. They are both over a year old so the black one must be a bantam.

Dare I ask how old she was in March 2015? Was she a "day old" chick?

According to the woman they hand raised them in the house starting some day in March 2015. I believe her as the EE in particular is very friendly, lets me approach her, pick her up etc. The little black one is more skittish toward me but not scared of the other chickens so much.

I, for one (at least

) can't wait to see the first egg she lays for you. When did you get her? She should have been laying for about a year now. GENERALLY speaking spring chicks will lay through their first winter and all the next spring and summer until their first adult moult. After that winter laying usually drops off and may not happen at all.

I would expect at least 4-6 a week now from a 2015 hatched hen, at least based on my BAs. Maybe bantams don't lay as well, I don't know anything about them except that they are smaller.

Quote: She Looks more like a game bird to me than a bantam .
She looks like a lot like a sumatra ...I have 2 hens ..they are about 1/3 the size of a regular hen .
They are Diminutive...Their body shape is different they do lay white eggs
also the boys would have a heck of a time catching her ...if she is ...Sumatras can fly better than the average chicken .
Do you mean March 2016 ? not 2015...? as she should be starting to come of age at 5 months .
TiTi She is a broody machine ..she has been broody 3 times this year
