Australorps breed Thread

Good advise getaclue that fits.
Cactusrota,
They are still babies and will do all kinds of flighty and weird stuff, do not jump to conclusions about their behavior until they grow up.All young chicks are flighty just like kids, they will grow out of it. We do not cuddle and pamper at Rattlesnake Ridge because you always have to be the alpha with cockerels and cock birds, maybe just baby the pullets. In 5 to 6 months you will know if someone is headed for the table!

Says the man petting Dundee on his lap....LOL! I don't pamper my cockerels/cocks much either, until I'm sure I'm established as alpha. Mine go into "rooster training" fairly early. The hens, however, are a different story.

Yep,
You got the evidence, and you got me there! What can I say, I have got wiser with age and Dundee was my baby until a rattlesnake bit him and ruined my day.

Privett got back to me about the chick. This was their response:

Hi,

I have an answer for the baby chick you received in the mix with your Black Australorps. According to the hatchery manager the chick you receives is a Blue Australorp is a new breed for us this year and it is a beautiful chicken.

Thank You.

So, it looks like they just recently added Blue (or likely BBS) Australorps to their repetoire, and one of them must have made it into the Black breeding pen. Now I wonder what their source was. I read that they got their Buckeye line from Sand Hill. Hopefully she'll grow nice and big!

Are you sure it's a pullet? Lots of Blue roos are black on top and blue on bottom. Are the breast feathers this black too?

Only 4 weeks old so still not sure but dark feathers all around! I found that blue roos only start developing black feathers on top around 15 weeks old

The blues can come in different shades of blue, from light all the way to the darker blue that can almost look black.

It was my blue roo crossed with black h en

Black left. Blue right

With the parents that you mentioned most likely that blue one is still going to be a darker blue with good lacing. Have you taken a good look at the rooster that is on Kurt's lap in his avatar?
