Australorps breed Thread

this is just a comparison for you, photo australorp rooster, and black orpington rooster...these are american version..the australorp has longer neck curves nose to tail..the orpington has bigger wider body and more body fluff..the australorp should be worked back to have tighter feather..but you can also see similarities..deep chest, wide tail fan , no pinched tail when viewed from behind or from from the side..the rear view should form a V seen on hens..on roosters from cochin in blk orp ancestry the tail often forms like a fountian...the american standard has a picture of what is considered ideal..

if you look back a few pages, somone from australia posted some pictures of their wonderful birds..australia has taken them to an art form...perfect eyes feather lacing and body and they retained the tighter feather as queensland required to be inducted into their standard

i think you could take some more pics for us like they said..you can look for weaknesses and try to correct it with your choice of hens.
i like australorp roosters that have that benevolent nature..you cant put a price on that..he looks like he is about to jump down off there so his tail looks a little pinched..but thats nothing that you cant work out..he seems to have a nice comb and wattles and face..but a good profile and or front rear pics would help..he does have nice green coloring..
I am thinning out my flock to improve the quality, and I would like your opinion on my rooster. He has great green sheen to his feathers, white skin, dark eyes, dark shank, and the bottom of his feet are white, with just a tiny bit of yellow. He is huge. Much taller than my Delawares and Orpingtons. He is calm and good with the hens. I am getting rid of all the roosters that do not meet type, what do you think?

If you can obtain an A.P.A. "Standard of Perfection" book, there are great illustrations of the body types that you can compare.
Also on line you can find the standards and pictures of both breeds to see the differences.

Orpingtons are considered a HEAVY breed, large with no sweeping back but almost flat with a slight upward angle to the tail. The plumage is very loose and fluffy compared to the Australorps with sweeping "U" shaped back and nice tight plumage.
Orps also have a small to medium sized comb compared to a large tall single comb of the Australorp.

Go visit a poultry show and you will definately see a difference in the body sizes and widths.

Both breeds are great to own, funny, freindly, talkitive, dual purpose and beautiful !

to die for!!!!! those australian version are spectacular..wish we could make some arrangement with somone over there..look at the wonderful lacing on most of the feathers , i bet that would make some correct blues, and the perfect eye..when US went off into the industrial revolution and started letting mc donalds and KFC feed us, we drpped the ball on bettering these birds..importation would have been easier a while ago than it is now...those look like they are out of ray connors barn..the official australorp of australia web site said there was quite a waiting list and buying pullets is very tough..they hold right on to them..hard enough here to find a somewht decent hen, and most are hatchery and any sort of throwback gene can crop up..long time ago i had a few hatchery hens molt out and their heads had barring..i know there is barred rock in their heritage, but it was as if somone tried to re-create this breed here recently..there are some real good ones here but needle in a haystack..

I had actually gotten the info from the u.s. customs dept on shipping hatching eggs from Australia, it seemed live animals were a problem and would have to spend several days in quarantine and perhaps not making the trip or the stress involved. whereas the eggs would cost $149.00 for an over seas permit and no quarantine required. once again handling could be the difference between eggs that would hatch and the all might Murphy putting his hands on the lot and you've spent a grip of cash to bring home dead eggs. The odds were against me and I dont have the gambling money to waste so I just had to bow out. Darn!

$149.00 to ship eggs from over seas is this from most places or just Australia, I've never checked to see how much that would cost most made it seems as if it would cost thousands of dollars $149.00 although alot of momnies it dosen't add up to thousands of $$ seems a couple people could easly go in together and get some eggs for some of the breeds that need a dose of new or better genes??
