Yes, there a a lot of colors and things that look neat, but are bad for show quality.

I think purple is neat too. I would not be able to breed for that though.

One problem is if we breed too far away from a Standard, they won't be the same breed anymore. It would be better to look for a breed with a purple sheen.

On the EE thread I posted a picture of my SG Dorking Pullet. They are supposed to have white legs. Ameraucana(a lot on the EE thread have thos) are supposed to have slate to greenish legs. One person thought the Dorking was bad because of the white legs. He thought it was just wrong looking. If the Dorking had legs like an Ameraucana, it would be bad for showing in competition and you would not breed it.

Yes, I see. I am not at all into showing so it easily slips my mind. I do understand maintaining breed distinctiveness though. If I end up with any purplish austral -oops I will just keep them for looking at and

with regard to purple sheen, the part that interested me was that this guy reckons that it can be brought on by stress in rearing. I'd always thought it was purely a genetic thing. I guess it's just another version of the old heredity VS environment debate.

Love these old books. Nice to see there has been very little change in what the Australorp looked like then and today. Your avatar could have been the model for these pics in that books.

For Aussie nuts only! It seems from pics and observations from the time, that the 'original' Aussies were very similar in conformation to the original Cook Orp. Among other bits and pieces, it seems that what really lifted the laying bar was the addition of these Croad Langshans, which were not, it seems, the same as those available to Cook in England for his original 'recipe'. The buggers sure could lay! It appears that all Aussies are in debt to these 8 original birds.
