Australorps breed Thread

do you want an iraq war flag to go in the case with it? i can send it to you, has all of the paper work with it..well a picture of the plane it flew in ect...i have rev war long flint lock rifles, some clothing from that era, more paperwork than i care to look through, photos and things from civil war,like gov issued horse bridles and brushes.. sorry jim.., yankees are plain tired of wars..been for a long time...the additude now is OMG oh no here we go again..when do we get to quit this.most of us just want to make maple syrup, farm and be left alone..this country has been one long perpetual war..were bone weary of it...

back on topic..i wish we had some egg competitions here like they do in england..there are people that show at these shows that breed only egg layers that produce that perfect specimine..i have a couple blue ribbons from local fairs that offered egg competition..had a great time doing that..finding the nicley shapped eggs,,matching them up for size and praying he doesnt crack one with a tiny spot that the candler misses in brown eggs..thou i didnt get many of those..i know there is a lot of work goes into it..but i know there would be a lot of interest in it..there was at the fair shows, and it was barley advertised..in the state its in. there is only one champion ribbon, they arnt segregated into brown champion, white egg champ blue and green with over all best in sho like other countries....it would be a good thing..suprising amount of interest..and here they give that 1 lonley champion ribbon to the blue eggs every year.

Can you give me the page those pictures are on Aveca? There are egg shows now in CA, it is kind of new here. The Heritage Expo here in Santa Rosa had competition for chickens, ducks, geese and Turkeys. A Marans breeder by the name of Peter Ovalle is putting them on. He started with just Marans and now is doing other breeds. The beauty of these is that it is easy to mail the eggs to the competitions and you don't need to get the eggs back. This way you could enter an egg show anywhere. all you need is one person to coordinate it and then set it up with the show management.

There is a lot of interest in it as you have said.

i would like to add to that, one thing that i learned is just how important the sop is to form and function..this is my observation when gathering hatching eggs, and eggs for the fair egg competitions..since i over the years have had at one time or another both hatchery australorp and competition birds...the birds that fit closer to standard with nice tail tenting and width plus other features always laid the better shaped , few spots in eggs.. so this isnt often said..but when the sop was created they had made these observations that the egg quality was better, the meat carcass was better ect..i got to see it play out in front of me with egg competitions..just how it all works..the sop takes for granted that people have been off the farm , into the work place and pretty much now we are learning all over again what was common knowlege way back then..

lot of the local small farm organic people LOVE to show at these competitions so they can show off their ribbons in their organic stores..were hoping somone will help give it some traction and grow to bigger awards..i won brown egg division 2 yrs in a row..those aussie eggs have a great smooth surface , not really pourous..pretty ..but its hard on the rest of us watching that lonley champion ribbon walk out the door with blue eggs...

Well people do like the tinted colored eggs, but a well shaped egg is nice to see whatever color it may be.

Here is something to try when taking pics of chickens. As you know they don't want to stay still and the delays on these digital cameras is forever....so if you have a video function on your digital camera use that....then go back and find the frames that show the bird the best and stop frame and capture the photo. Some will be slightly blurry as the bird moves, but usually there are some clear shots in there. Even when the shutter is instant it is hard to get a good pic of a chicken.

It is kind of hard to make a judgement of the entire bird with them in exhibition coops, but I can see enough to know that they have good length of back and they are wide.
Overall good aussies. Another thing to look for in these or most chickens for that matter, is that it is easy to lose the depth. The body of an Aussie should be rather deep with no indication of flat spots in the front end. The upper breasts are almost always fine, but where they might fail is the lower part under the breast. If you look at a profile and see a straight line instead of a curve then it would be considered a shallow breast. This is much easier to explain while looking at a live bird.

Thank you all for your help, I appreciate everyone's efforts.

However, I would like to point out that I do understand that just because one chicken sets a record does not mean all the best layers will be as good; I was simply using the example as I asked for what was more 'normal' in a general, real Australorp. And thank you for the information!



In addition, does anybody know where the most consistently broody Australorps came from? It's something I try hard to keep in my flock.
