Australorps breed Thread

Hello everyone,
I have been watching and not posting for awhile now. I have 10 BA pullets and a rooster. I have gotten 3 little pullet eggs from them this week. I am so happy to start getting eggs, the rooster is starting to get them,so I will be able to start hatching soon. I like many in the US are starting with hatchery birds but will work to improve my line with breeding and introduction of new blood. I will post pictures tomm for everyone to give their opinion. I have learned so much from reading your post thanks please keep posting all the helpful info.

Thanks,
Richard

Hey, DeesHens, you know what's cool and creepy too? My Australorp, Maya, has black eyes, but you can easily see her whites too, so they look sort of human. And dog-like too.
Oh my gosh! That is pretty wild. We have two black Poms with dark brown eyes. One of them is a huntress so when she goes after anything the whites of her eyes show vividly with her eye movements as she chases after her prey. We have always laughed at this as it is so crazy looking. So when you described your Maya I could totally relate. Can you post a pic of her? I'd love to see Maya.

Wonderful news Richard! I am looking forward to seeing your pics tomorrow. ~Dee~

Well, if you are going for good layers and not breeding to show your girls whether they have the brown cast in their eyes probably isn't a issue.

I would personally love to have hens with black eyes just because I think they look so cool. But I will be purchasing utility chicks and will accept whatever I get.
My girls are both pets and layers so as long as they are healthy I will be happy.

Doesn't stop me from totally admiring the SQ BA's & I enjoy learning as much as I can.

So far haven't found the fencing I want locally so may need to order it online and pay the horrid shipping charge.

We appear to be on the same page (in the same coop?) on this. I got them for eggs not for show. I just didn't realize how far from "spec" a hatchery bird might be since these are my first chickens. I had assumed they were the same as SQ, just not top of the line. No matter, if they lay eggs, I got what I wanted. AND Ideal was 100% on sexing. Can't ask for better!

With regard to the fence. I assume you didn't have hardware cloth on the lower part of the fence and the openings were big enough for the coon to reach through?
I wanted to buy locally, it is good for the economy but no one carried long rolls of 1/2" hardware cloth. Too much waste with multiple 25' rolls unless you are building from scratch and can design to the available materials.

I got it from Amazon 3' x 100' rolls for $90 (price up to over $100 last I looked) and that included shipping.

Oh, Oh, Oh! Just looked again, now $83.27!!!!!! And if you want 4' wire, $57.32 for a 50' roll or the same price for a 2' x 100' roll. Still eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping.

BTW, we have a chicken named after you. Well, OK, she is actually named after my M-I-L

Gee, that sounds just like my story. Got the chickens for eggs, didn't even know they weren't up to snuff. They look great to me (except for the part where I look at their brown eyes, white feathers, which they're losing, their fronts, their backs, their tails, their clean faces or lack thereof, distance between legs, etc. LOL) and they're just what I wanted. From Ideal Poultry too and so far appear to be 100% pullet, hatched Sept. 18.

At 9 weeks you can be pretty sure. I was worried I had a roo since they were different sizes and one was scruffier. I posted some 4.5 week pictures. Someone posted pictures of their 3.5 week old chicks. WHOA - RED COMB and WATTLES! I moved on to my next pair of "I wonder if one is a roo" until I ran out of girls to worry about

The smaller one laid her first two eggs Sunday and Tuesday. Still waiting on the bigger one.
My avatar is the larger girl from some weeks ago. Probably ~18 weeks and as you can see, not much for comb or wattles.

Look here, post 18:

If yours have never looked like that middle picture, you have pullets, congrats!

Bruceha: I'll try and take pictures later this afternoon. I've got company coming for lunch and don't have time now. But now I'm worried that I have at least 6 roos!!!! Mine have bigger combs and wattles than your avatar and they're pink.

But I've heard that Ideal is really, really good at sexing, so I'll try to remain calm.

The two smaller ones definitely have no pink and almost no combs.

Quote: Enjoy the Australorps! It is great to hear some are starting to lay now.

It is hard to get SQ Australorps. It is a very popular breed from the big hatcheries, but rare as Show Quality. Some here have been trying to get them for quite some time.

I may try to get some from Sherman in Southern CA this spring.
