About once per week I dump the bucket, allow it to refill, slosh the water around and dump again. Let it refill, then tip a tad of chlorine bleach it to it. Less than a one minute chore.
I have never taken the float valve out, never taken it apart to clean it, it has never stuck open nor closed. Been in the chicken yard a little over a year, absolutely no disassembly.
Yes! Just like any thing else you would leave laying around in a chicken yard, it do get funky. Little bits of hay, grass, feed anything that goes into the yard, gets in the bucket. I saw a picture of this design on BYC, can't remember who posted it. The one piece of advice I can give, is make sure the bucket has a lid. You can vary the level/amount of water in the bucket by raising or lowering the position the float valve. I keep the water level high in the bucket, slightly below the holes.
