We are a family of 2 plus we give eggs to DHs parents. We have 6 laying hens that provide enough eggs for us at their peak production. We also have 43 chicks (3.5 mos old). However, of the chicks, 17 are excess roos that we will butcher for meat and several hens may be gifted to a friend of ours. We will end up with 3 roos and about 20-25 hens (including the original 6 hens). We are on about a 1/2 acre of land and our chickens.
I would think that 12 hens should be enough (in their peak production).
