?? Average Home Flock Size ????

We are a family of 2 plus we give eggs to DHs parents. We have 6 laying hens that provide enough eggs for us at their peak production. We also have 43 chicks (3.5 mos old). However, of the chicks, 17 are excess roos that we will butcher for meat and several hens may be gifted to a friend of ours. We will end up with 3 roos and about 20-25 hens (including the original 6 hens). We are on about a 1/2 acre of land and our chickens.

I would think that 12 hens should be enough (in their peak production).

We are a family of 4, and have a 9000 sq. foot lot in the city, with 4 2 week olds, 6 year-old hens, and 10 at point-of-lay, 2 of whom are roos (obviously no laying there, but the same age). We are trying to re-home the roos, but one is special needs, and the other is proving difficult to rehome, as roos aren't allowed in city limits.

Wish I could find a home for this guy!!

I found 6 layers was perfect for our needs and enough to give away eggs periodically, even during the winter- at least this first year. I'm guessing production will not be nearly as great as time goes on. I wanted to be able to sell a dozen here and there to pay for the feed...and basically am as addicted to these things as everyone else, so I got 10 more this spring. I put borrowed eggs under a broody to get the other 4.

The 4 and their mom will be going away in August, and if the roos find homes, I think we'll be at perfect capacity for our yard.

16 grown chickens is a bit much, since it is dense enough for visible poop accumulation and the din of 16 hens laying daily (or nearly daily) would be a bit much in a neighborhood. I think a dozen would be best.

In our house we have 2, My DD lives probable 60 feed away family of 4, GS lives across the road, family of 3 expecting another nov. I have 11 hens, 2 new babies 1 week old 24 eggs in bator and we have 27 acres. so 9 people and 27 acres of mountain and rock,My GS has 20 guianias, but since we never know where they lay, we just use my eggs.

We are a family of 5, with my parents (2), and sister and brother-in-law as neighbors. The chickens are a communal effort and we share the eggs but live at our house in a pen next door to our barn. We have almost 4 acres, but are on the edge of my dad's 80 acre farm. Right now we have one adult rooster, 8 laying hens (giving us on average 6 eggs a day)-5 red sex links, 2 white rocks, and 1 dark cornish, and 9 chicks that are between the ages of 9-12 weeks, 7 are hens (easter egger cross and dark cornish cross), and 2 rooster chicks. We definitely know we will be eating one (he is not very nice at a young age, can you imagine when he grows up?) and maybe keeping the other guy who is a polish cross. That is 18 for us...can't wait until the little pullets start laying so we can sell some eggs and pay for the feed. We love our chickens!!

Live in the city limits of 100 x 180??? lot, I have three LF and 7 bantams, and 7 Spitz LF chicks (will sell more later).

My chicken coop is 4 x 7 and run is 16 and half foot long x 8 and it is plenty of room for them to run around in.

I've had 30 chickens at one time, it was TOO much so I will not attempt to go that far unless I am selliing them, keeping the best ones for breeding or laying flock.

Family of three!

We are a family of three with 5 laying hens (just lost one this spring), 4 ducklings and 4 goslings on 11 acres. We have other animals, but the fowl stays up in the first acre around the house and the larger animals are set back in the forest. We get 3-5 eggs a day year round, so we give a lot away and sell some.

We are a family of four. We (I) justed started with chickens this spring. We live in a subdivision but have two acres of land. I purchased seven pullets this spring to get started with. I originaly was just going to purchase four Barred Rock pullets but when I was at the store I decided to get three Red Sexlinxs aswell. Good that I did because it turns out that three of the four Barred Rocks are roosters! I am keeping all of them for now, I am just waiting for the neighbors to start complaining. I did make the comment to one neighbor friend that if someone complains I will just bribe them with eggs. He told me that I had it all wrong, that if someone complains then they get no eggs!

OMG!!!!!!!!!! We have 10 acres with 8 chickens, two dogs and four cats ..............now I see what everyone else has, I am definitely getting more chickens - the husband said 8 was enough - not!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!
