?? Average Home Flock Size ????

Family of 5, 6 acres, 11 laying hens, 7 'teenagers', and 16 newly hatched chicks.

We plan to maintain about 20-24 laying hens for eggs for our immediate & extended families & friends.

Just my husband and myself and have 30 pullets( some laying now), 1 roo on 50 acres and we also provide eggs for my daughters family of five. We will sell the remaining eggs at $2/doz to coworkers, etc to offset the feed. Any leftover money will be given to the grandkids for collecting and caring for the chickens.

Family of 2 adults here with 28 adult chickens (banties) on an acre, 22 newly hatched chicks in the brooder and under some broodies, and 9- 12 week olds in the grow out pen giving me a grand total of 59

Usually I like to keep under 30 but it is breeding season and the chicks will be sold shortly so we should be back to a managable number in no time.

We are a family of 5 with 6 pullets (24 weeks) no one is laying yet. We live in the city on .4 acres fenced in. The girls have a coop and run of about 200 sf and I let them out in the yard a couple times a day (hawks are a major problem). We are hoping that we will have enough eggs for us and to give to family and friends.

Family of 1 in the city on a quarter acre with 9 pullets who should start laying any time now. The have a giant 40' run, but are let out to free range an our before dark everyday to do the job they were hired for - search and destroy pests. Some eggs will be given away, others will be sold at $4 doz. to offset cost of feed.

I too do not consider myself average...more compulsive. We live on 35.5 acres, but my chickens do not free range or run the whole shabang. Right now we have chickens in several different stages. I have 1 roo and 1 hen, 21 pullets/cocks, 16 2 months olds, 11 even smaller pullets, 7 guinnea(2 free range), and hopefully we will have more quail and ducks before summers end. Oh, and I have 26 eggs in the bator hopefully hatching any day.

I would like to add that we are a family of 6...and I sell eggies and hopefully soon will be selling chicks and such.

family of one (plus my collie dog) on a very small city lot. I am allowed 3 hens, with the neighbors permission, but am having a hard time keeping it to that number. Have 4 now, and figure that if I share eggs, make sure there is no odor or noise (we have very loud wild birds, grackles, mockinbirds, etc, the chooks are quiet by comparison) I can get by with having as many as I can house. . . had to re-home my beautiful Ameracauna Rooster, and have been promised one of his pullet chicks!

5 of us in the house, including a dog, rabbit, fish and rat, and
i have 5 hens in my backyard in the city
