AVOCADOS: poisonous for birds?

OK, that list says that cabbage is toxic. And I've heard several people here recommend hanging a head of cabbage in the run to prevent boredom.

I've noticed that list has a few foods on it that are fine normally, but have caused problems in situations where huge truckloads were fed to feed lot livestock animals, as their only food. Well, gee, I guess that was a problem, duh! You can imagine what the quality of the produce was, to be fed like that, also. I'm refering to the foods that are listed as "may contain toxic levels of nitrate." I'm unaware of any other cases of toxicity problems with those foods. I'm not saying there aren't any, I've just never read or heard of any.

Fortunately, we and our chickens are cared for in a better way than feed lot animals.

There are all sorts of dubious lists of foods that poison chickens, but if you want to be sure, consult a vet or university agronomy dept. Ever notice how chickens look and act the way we imagine dinosaurs act? My philosophy is that the chickens were doing just fine for millions of years without us, and they can take care of themselves... including using their keen senses to avoid harm. For example, styrofoam and plastic plant markers do no more harm than pebbles, since they are inert. Mine have eaten most of a styrofoam takeout tray. (Of course now, I take stuff like that away from them.) I have seen chickens eat a dishwasher size rhubarb bush down to the ground with no effect. I feed them old fruit from time to time and never bother removing seeds. Same goes for shelter. Chickens run around in the ice and snow all the time with no problems... they instinctively know how to seek shelter and huddle up. Sure, all birds are not the same and some things might cause harm. In my experience, no food item on any internet list I have seen is harmful. The only things I worry about are bits of wire, staples, and other common sense items. In summary: get information from reliable sources and don't worry about your chickens. They are adaptable and hardy animals.

I just read in DG that avocados are poisonous to birds. Does anyone have any evidence of this?

Evidence is not required on BYC. In fact, "I heard that......" trumps actual evidence in most cases.
