Aztec Ducks!

I have added another trio to my group Another drake and two hens. They have settled in well, with no issues. But the naughty ducks did find a way to knock the netting loose and get out of their pen. I think I've fixed that now and they are all safely back inside.

Oh, these are from the same breeder as the other guys - just an extra trio he had still and asked if I would like to add them to my guys, and I did like

My current goal is trying to find some nice mallards so I can outcross. The Aztecs as they are now are all pretty much related AND have far more Call traits than they should, and crossing back to mallards would help to solve both those issues.

Hey Aztec fans! We are so excited to be working with Pyxis (and three other VT folks!) on the Aztec project. We and another friend got what we think may have been one of the last group of Aztecs and we've been working hard to increase their numbers and infuse some much needed genetic vigor. There is a long local history with these little guys and we plan on sharing what we know about their past and hopefully find dedicated folks to join the project and bring them back to the popularity that they enjoyed years ago. We have pictures to share and information to provide and are working on our new farm website too. More to come...

I wanted to share some pictures of our Aztecs here at Wilder Woods Holiday Farm. Since we took on this restoration project a few years ago, we've been able to meet a few dedicated folks to help us out, including @Pyxis. There is so little information out there and very few pictures, so we thought it would be great to have something for folks to find when they are searching the web! We have been contacted by a few people around the country who have found us somehow and from referrals from Holderread, who created the breed in the 80s. In 2019, the breed has quite a bit of variability of conformation and coloration, and we are in the part of the project of breeding for the features that Holderread intended. There are two colors defined for the breed: Porcelain and Blue Pearl. The Blue Pearl color had been bred out of the last flocks, so we are just starting to bring that back - they last two pictures are birds of the Blue Pearl color. If you would like to read the "standard" breed description that Holderread created, contact them for a copy - it costs only a few dollars.

Gorgeous birds. Call ducks are adorable little things, but I love the natural (for lack of a better term) look of these guys. Particularly, the bill length. Can't wait to see what shapes up from those of you working on the breed.
