Hi y'all. I have a little problem. You see, last night at around 8:00pm I put an 8hr old chick in the brooder. The problem is that it still looks wet although it's completely dry. Other than that, there's a very tiny piece of shell stuck to it. I dont understand the problem. Oh and it popped and all so it should be fine right. I'm a newby. My first time. Cheers. Oh and bdw, how long does a chick have to live to kind of confirm it's going to remain alive please. Please help!!!!!

Chickens can die at any age, so there's really no benchmark. I thought 6 weeks would be a good bet, then lost a lot during that 6th week so...

What is the temperature of your brooder?

Welcome To BYC

Has your chick been able to eat/drink? Is it walking?
I would give it 1-2 drops of poultry Nutri-Drench 2 times a day. Encourage it to eat/drink.
The stuck fluff can make it a little harder to stay warm, can your chick move to get under the heat source and out of it if it gets too hot?
You can take a soft toothbrush and lightly brush the fluff to see if you can get some of the down loosened up. Go slow and careful, their skin will tear easily.

It's currently 37 degrees Celsius so about 98.6 tks, not to mention that its around 95 during the day here in my country so it's quite hot. Tks

It's been 19hrs and he's still alive. So I guess he drank and ate. He also, exuse my language, pooped too. He is able to walk from the lamp to the corner and from the corner to the lamp too. Tks for your advice

I'm not sure how much you know about chickens and chicks, however chicks have a yolk sac which provides them nutrients for the first 3 days of life. During that time, the chick may not eat or drink voluntarily.

Oh ok. Thank you! So he'll just eat alone when he's ready?

I would show him the food and water, if he is by himself he may not be that inclined to explore. At those temperatures, you chick can dehydrate quickly.

Since your daytime temps is 95, I would lower the brooder temperature to around 90. A 19hour old chick will normally drink and try to eat.

Do you have any pet shops that carry bird vitamins? Look for Nettex Nutri-Drops to give to your chick.
