Baby Chicks keep dumping out their food

Oh the nature of chicks and chickens!

They are HUGE food wasters and if you watch them scratch outside you can see why so much is OUT of the feeders. In the past we have taken their feeders and screwed them to boards so it is impossible for them to tip the feeder but they still love getting in and scratching it all over. You need to get hens so the eggs you sell pay for their feed!

There are different kinds of feeders. We have found some are better to SLOW waste but none to prevent it. GOOD LUCK!!

Those long feeders with the little holes in them work well. They still try to get it out but then others come and peck at it and clean most of it up.

I have the chick feeders that you attach a quart (or whatever size, I use a pint jar for my 3) jar to. Once they got really good at emptying the feeder (and knocking over the water at the same time), I ran wire around the jars to create a hanging feeder with. I just had to raise the food up again last night as they have gotten tall enough to reach the feeder with their scratching again! Just make sure they can reach in with their heads...mine had to stretch a little for the first few days and the smallest had to have a small branch to stand on to reach the water (the other two were so much taller!), but they really like having the food and water up...they hang out directly under them most of the time!
