hello im new to raising chicken . i raised 2 brahmas male and female from 1 months until they became big. my hen just started laying eggs and it is very small. anyway she became broody so i let her sit on 3 of her small eggs i was 100% sure that it wont hatch. 21 passed the small eggs hatched into very small chicks . the first one i woke up in the morning found him dying blood in his head eye swollin my rooster most likely killed him but i didnt see the act. the second one was still under his mom came out crowling i saw the hen peck him on his eyes and the rooster also peck him twice in the head. he started bleeding so i had to put him out. the 3rd couldnt even get out from the egg too weak . i realised i shouldnt let the rooster around my baby chicks that my mistake but i didnt understand why was my hen killing them too ?

Sometimes broodies do this. If others are supposed to hatch, stay there with her and take them all inside.

Not all hens make good mothers. Some are only good at hatching.

Also, for health of the chicks, you shouldn't hatch small eggs. If your mama is still young, it may take weeks or months for her eggs to get big enough to ensure the chicks have enough space to develop well.

It's not always the rooster. My roosters are great around chicks, wven the solo dudes penned nearby. But i have a few hens that are more than glad to do "population control" to their own chicks or chicks belonging to lower ranking hens
