I found another nest of eggs yesterday evening. Thelma or Louise was the culprit. Every morning I found a an egg right out in the open in my flower bed in plain sight. I think they were using that as the decoy egg so I wouldn't look for the others. I looked under the Peony bush and there were about 8 eggs in a pretty little circle hidden very well. They are determined to hatch more babies.

I fed them watermelon today and Que Sera loves it. She wasn't running for the treats when I throw them out but she was with the watermelon. She saw Uno going for a bite and she let him have it. She shares with her little friend.

They sell misters that put out a little sprinkles of water.  You could put one of those out to help cool them down.  I'm so sorry for your loss.   I know how sad it is.

are u in Medford area? That's usually the hottest spot in the state? I am sorry u lost two of your Sweetie chickens to the heat. It is so brutal. It sounds like u r taking great measures to keep your feathered beings cool. I hope they all get thru this furnace blast of weather.

I'm actually in Cottage Grove area, it's very unusual for it to be this hot here too. I've got a sprinkler with a mist setting that I set out in the middle of the yard so if they leave the shaded area they have to go through it, but they don't like it at all.

As to this unusual stretch of heat we're having it's got me concerned. Bend was 96 today. Icky. I went mtn biking in the Cultus/Waldo Lake area today and it was pretty dang warm but when I got back into town it was hideous.

If your chickens don't like the misters, do they just sit in the shade? Do they pant like the ducks? Poor things. It is like they can't remove any clothing. I think it's sweet you are doing your best to keep them comfy.

I have found the walkout basement is a blessing in high heat, both for me and for the ducks. I have been thinking about whether duck and chicken shelters might be better designed by being half underground where possible. It insulates against cold and heat. And, yes, big pain in the neck . . . but it might be less trouble longer term than trying to manage the temperatures of an above-ground structure...

Just sharing my thoughts.
