baby duck with lots of problems

Way too hot Julie Bird.

I know you understand completely what it's like but peace reigns.

It certainly does, Miss Lydia.

Julie with temps like that you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. My ducks said come on over they would love to meet you. Just bring watermelon, boiled eggs, tomatoes etc. etc. They would love you . Stay cool.

No kidding with the eggs on the sidewalk Patty. For real, you could. I would absolutely love to spoil your cuties with all those treats. Hey, they eat the same foods I do.

I have found the walkout basement is a blessing in high heat, both for me and for the ducks. I have been thinking about whether duck and chicken shelters might be better designed by being half underground where possible. It insulates against cold and heat. And, yes, big pain in the neck . . . but it might be less trouble longer term than trying to manage the temperatures of an above-ground structure...

Just sharing my thoughts.

That is an incredibly intriguing idea. I can't believe that never even occurred to me since I had a friend who lived in an underground house and have always been fascinated with them. That is something we could actually do where we live now because we have fairly steep hill in our backyard. However, it will not be mentioned to hubby until next week because the hubby has a rented backhoe right now, so he'd be tempted to do it even though we plan to move next year. A good spot for an underground duck house is now on my list of things to look for on our new property!

One big advantage is not having to worry about running electricity and risking fire. We do have electric service in the basement, but we do not need to have a heater down there - the ground keeps it 40F or warmer.

I know this isn't for everyone - but it may make sense for some of us.

I saw a video of a woman in Australia, sub-tropical climate, who built a very well insulated chicken coop. In fact, she set it up so that it was well ventilated, yet muffled the sound of the rooster crowing significantly. So this thick-walled coop kept the chickens cool and the neighbors unaffected by noise at the crack of dawn.

Sepp Holzer is an Austrian farmer who builds earthen shelters for all his livestock, including his Runner ducks - I think they share a stall with others….maybe not….

One of my life's goals is to move somewhere warm and build a lovely adobe villa. I'd love to make a little underground earthen coop for the ducks, as well!

I think that's a good idea. Building the coops underground or at least put a basement under the coop.

I put Que Sera in the bathtub last night. She looked so lonely so I went and got Uno and put him in with her. I think my suspisions are right I think Uno is a boy. Que Sera honked and chattered constantly and Uno would make little peeping noises every now and then. I put some frozen peas in the water and they would dive down and eat them. I don't think Que Sera gets in the pool outside. All the other ducks do but I haven't seen her in the pool at all. I've seen her dunk her head in from the side but I haven't seen her in it. Maybe eventually she will, she seems to enjoy the tub tho.

I've got to get everyone fed and watered their waiting for me. I hope everyone has a nice day.

Uno was five weeks old yesterday. I try to keep everyones hatch dates on the calendar so I can keep up with them. I thought he was going to have the fawn runner colors but he has gray patches coming out on him.

I still have to get my flowers watered. With the heat I have to water the container plants everyday unless it rains. I think the monsoon is over now.
