Baby Midget’s Hatch-A-Long!

Update for today:

She has been sitting on all nine of her eggs and caring for them well! She’s very attached to them now, and I have a feeling that she is going to throw a fit when we take her eggs to candle them. Oh, well, at least she’ll get them back once we are done. Speaking of candling, I haven’t decided on when we should candle them for the first time, but I will most likely take pictures when we do.

This morning, when we went to wake the chickens up, she was off of her nest and pacing back and forth, trying to get out of the cage. We just opened the cage up for her and let her take her break in the coop. She did really well and even let us know when she was ready to go back in. I think we will have to do this every morning for her. We’ve had to do it for a different hen in the past, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Well, today was a good day for Baby Midget! She took her break inside of the cage this morning and went back on her nest all on her own. I think she’s figured it out! We also candled the eggs for fun tonight, and one, the big egg, was well developed, veined, and moving! It’s still early, but I would say she’s got herself a baby. There was another one that had some veining in it, and there was a third one that looked like it was developing well. I didn’t take any pictures, but I plan on taking some when we candle tomorrow. She has now gone from Baby Midget to Mama Midget. I just hope all the healthy eggs will hatch!

Today’s update:

Baby Midget is still doing great! She’s taking her own breaks and everything! This girl really knows what she is doing.

And as promised, here are the candling pictures-
There were 3 good eggs, and the rest have no development. I hope that changes, but I doubt most of them are even fertile.
