Remember that birds in the wild don’t have members of backyardchickens telling them what they should or shouldn’t eat.
And we have to remember 90% the poultry we keep is barely comparable to their wild counterparts. These are domestic quail, not wild.

I know with budgies that they can (and do) over do calcium if fed incorrectly (and these are undomesticated birds). It not just what you feed but how you feed it.

I personally wouldn't supplement calcium to chicks.

That is completely up to you. Remember that birds in the wild don’t have members of backyardchickens telling them what they should or shouldn’t eat. I personally would keep it but I’m not an expert by any means. I have a baby food jar lid with crushed up eggshells for my 8 day old quail if it makes any difference
Ok I guess I'll put it back in there. Although these aren't wild birds, I still think they are smart enough. If they eat it and think it's hurting them, then they will just stop.

Are they just pecking at a cuttle fish bone out of boredom? How were they fed it differently/incorrectly?

My runt quail just died so maybe listen to someone else. Frick, I don’t know.

2 weeks old, the runt died at 36 hours. Sorry it sounded like the others had grown up
Ah.. sad. Doubt they’ll be short on calcium for a while yet so no harm leaving it out if your worried. There’ll be some in the starter your using anyway.
I like that they can try it so they remember what it is when they need it.
