Back At The Chicken Shack

I do love the French Maran egg colour, I definitely have to breed for darker brown eggs.

You can really see the difference in the shades of “brown” colours, we figure the lightest egg is probable Inky’s and the slightly darker brown a Naked Neck’s.

Working on my goals…

Sent an email to a possible source for RIR Rosecomb hatching eggs. Now we wait and see if they are still breeding them.

Will be ordering RIW Rosecomb hatching eggs, found a source.

Breeding Goals

Hhubby has some experiments he wants to do if we get Saipan male chicks in the straight run order, and I know he has some pure breeding he wants to do as well with the birds.

My goals.

Establish a White and Red line of RI Rosecomb, improve their size, egg laying, egg size, egg colour (I want to breed for dark eggs). Get them nicely in line with SOP in general. I really want to improve them meat wise as well… a solid dual purpose goal.

Produce Sex Linked Rosecombed chickens with RI body. I will need some Dominique if I want to breed Black Sex Link. But Golden/Red should be no problem if I can get the two colour lines established.

I might try to locate some ”RI blues” which I know are a cross breed but I do like blues. The idea of fiddling with them is appealing, to get Rosecomb bred in and create a nice Blue/Black/Splash line… but that is way low on priority… if I see the chicks I will get a few sort of thing.

Both hubby and I have some NN experiments we want to do.

The project I am considering will be to create a couple colour lines of NN with Rosecomb and RI bodies. White, Red, and Barred. We feel the NN we have are not SOP anyway and need improvement in both size and egg laying so experimental breeding is the plan with them.

We also will want to set up an Olive Egger and Blue Egger lines of birds from our flock… not sure what traits we will want in them besides large green and blue eggs.

Today is weight day…

I am going to post stuff on the birds in general here. I started this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/the-island-project.1512635/ The Island Project, to focus on the specific breeding project I want to do. But I will be posting a lot of the in process here.

So I figured out which adult birds we have that can be part of the project and which can’t… though I need to identify one I shouldn’t use. Possible maybe on using Lana.

My current goal is a nice RI type body NN, and two nice RI lines one red, one white. This is an in process sort of thing. Basically I focus on project planning and ideas, results over there. Don’t worry I will update on all the feathered kids here too. :jumpy

Looking for these birds is like the search for Bigfoot, Unicorns or other mythic creature….

I did manage to find hatching eggs for the whites… fingers crossed on them. I ordered 6.

Other breeds of interest … Dominique, note the difference in combs between Rhode Islands and Doms.
