In the Brooder
Hi,
I am looking forward to having access to the wealth of information on this site. I have had chickens for around 20 years then took a 15-year break. Three years ago, I resurrected the coop and run and was gifted 5 RIR pullets. It was wonderful having chickens once again and I realized how much I missed them. Our last hen died this May and I did not think I would have the opportunity to have chicks this year as we live in a small town and there is no mail order option. All my past chickens have been straight run sexed day olds of one type only. We had RIR, Barred Rock, Harco Sex Links. Luckily our local feed store was bringing in chicks and I was able to purchase a variety of chicks so I now find myself with ten chicks that are eight weeks old. I wanted to increase my chances of hens and purchased 2 sexed Columbian Rocks, 2 sexed RIRS and then rolled the dice with the following unsexed: 2 Black Copper Marans, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Speckled Sussex, 1 Ameraucana (turns out it is an EE). It looks like I may have lucked out perhaps have at least 4-5 pullets out of the 6 unsexed chicks. Fingers crossed.
What I love about having chickens is the hours I spend watching chicken TV, which consist of me in a lawn chair just shooting the breeze with the kids. Eggs!!! Sharing the enjoyment with my grandkids. Having chickens fall asleep in my lap.
I am lucky enough to live on 20 acres with forest, creek, land that is hayed by my neighbour (notice the Canadian spelling), gardens, 2 cats, a dog and now 10 chickens.
I have definitely got caught up in the “Is it a cockerel or a pullet?” game and that is what brought me to BYC with its wealth of knowledge. Being new to heritage breeds, the resource is so valuable. I am looking forward to participating in the forums as I will be looking for advice.
