Backyard Brahmas!!

400

One of my newest brahma babies. Will be 4 weeks old tomorrow.

My newest and prettiest little cockerel. I have a feeling this little guy will lead my flock some day. He's already very protective of the little ladies. Same dad as the other two, but an Orpington mama instead of Brahma.

I don't think you told us how old they are?  Anyway, 2, 3 & 5 look to me like they MIGHT be cockerels, but I wouldn't bet money on it.  I'm only basing it on the redness of their combs, which doesn't mean that they are cockerels for sure, they may just be pullets with redder combs.  If we knew how old they are it would help a little.  I know it is difficult, but if we could have back pictures of the birds in question it would probably help us to tell a little better.

I'd just wait and see.  I don't raise buffs, so I'm not the buff expert by any means and from what I understand they are notoriously hard to sex.  You might have to wait a bit to be able to tell for sure.

it looks to me like 4 6 & 7 are pullets.

Thank you! They are 6 weeks old today. I will try and get pics of their backs tomorrow.

Your telling me. This is why I would like to keep this nonsense from taking root over here. If the Brit's want to misuse the term, I guess that's there business, same for accepting vulture hocks in their standard, I guess.

But this is an American breed, developed here. and feel we set the standard for what a real Brahma should look like, and be described. (Anybody else hearing Otter's speech when the Delta's were in front of the review board in Animal House in their head here too ?)

The most common true red pyle that comes to mind is found in Old English Games, ( I wonder if we bastardized their standard in our version ?)
Rather condemning, Big Medicine, it´s not just the Brits...

, but I like the comment about the OEG. It happens with everything, someone else does something else with it. ie American bulldog.....
´m not very good with the colours, although I think the colours you breed and develop are beautiful.....
I found some brahmas referred to as Lemon Pyle..are any of these what you´d call lemon pyle, or splash? Just curious, but I´d like to be able to see the difference....are all these the same? They don´t look it to me. Some seem to have more white. I´m only talking about colour, not type.

That would depend entirely on if the birds color is a result of having dominant white, or two copies of blue.(not impossible for a bird to have both)

A true red pyle male is white breasted. These birds all appear to be columbian patterned based, regardless of the source of their color.

Ok, thanks. It´s got the tiniest bit clearer..just the tiniest bit!

So does it matter about the amount of black feathers they have? The diagram has no grey feathers showing, so that´s why I posted the last pic, as it seems to have no black or grey feathers. But it should have a white front and coloured neck and wings, then?
So, then what are these colours in the pics called? Splash?
