Good morning everyone! I can't believe it's snowing in mid April. At this rate, when the chicks come, I'll be brooding them in the kitchen. I can't seem to get in more than one day in a row to work on the coop/run. Hubby got the weekend off to help me, but I can already see nothing will get done.

Sjisty, even though I don't have chicks yet, you sound like I feel. The whole thought of culling horrifies me. They're pets, and I don't eat my german shepherds, either.
Thanks so much for explaining vulture hocks. Since I didn't know, I couldn't recognize them in any of the pics. Now it makes sense, finally.

Sk8inChick(in), is the chicken in the first pic wearing a vest?

She's looking at it like "does this make my hips look too big? That's darling!
ps. so glad you're here.

Haha, yep, that's the chicken sweater prototype. None have been made since, as it didn't fit her, um, sizeable hips, and we had to cut it off her. She's saying, "does this make my chicken butt look too fluffy?"

So gald you led me to this thread. I look forward to hanging out with you guys here.

ETA: I totally disagree with the culling thing, it is just more of treating the birds like they are objects to be disposed of. And aren't we supposed to be pursuing a life for our chickens where they are not treated as a product of industry?

So I have a quick question for you all. At what age did your Brahma hens start laying at? One of mine was 5 months on the dot, and another was about 50 weeks. However, she never laid any pullet eggs, no fart eggs, just jumped right in, laying jubo-sized pink-yes legit pink-eggs.

What was everyone else's experience?

Silver your chicks are sooo cute! I had a hard time taking pics with so many in the brooder and they just don't stand still.

Sk8inChicken, mine started at 24 weeks. I had a few with soft shells at first but now they are so hard it's tough to crack them. Most lay brown but some of mine are pink too. It's fun arranging them in the carton.

They most definitely don't like to sit still much !!!!

Shes a fab mum, so gentle. She has two babies of her own and she adopted a faverolle and a barnevelder. So cute to watch her teaching them!
