Oh I do it all the time. Usually its over chicks and eggs. I ordered a $400 chicken coop without talking to DH. But, it was with my own money. When it got in, he thought it was right cute. My kids are 22 and 15. They know when "dont tell daddy" will always turns into dad will find out anyway so whats the big deal. If the incubator comes out, dad will find out. They know its just a good time and no harm is being done. Very few times has "dont tell dad" really been serious. And it wasnt chicken related, it really was something he really didnt need to know until the timing was right.

Idioms, Sarcasm, Parodies... eventually kiddos start to 'get it' but it takes time... just like growing my sense of humor did.

Just think of all the funny questions or action when a little kid hears "she's got a bee in her bonnet" or "the walls have ears"

Varies by age of course... when I was 12 I was already quite good at sarcasm, parodies and we'd already studied idioms.
But others, not so much. Some kids on here might snicker about it, others might be truly concerned.
Doesn't seem likely that a kid old enough to be on here wouldn't get that, wouldn't have heard the phrase before, but I suppose there's a possibility of it.

Random Note: Anyone seen The Little Mermaid? "My father's gonna kill me!" when she realizes she's late for the concert?
And then Sebastion... "My nerves are shot. This is a catastrophe! What would her father say? I'll tell you what her father'd say. He'd say he's gonna kill himself a crab, that's what her father'd say!"

So, yeah... quite a few youngsters exposed to that kind of talk early on...

Farmer Lew and I are equally culpable when it comes to chicken-related expenses, though if he had his way, he'd build us a BIG coop that we'd all be living in with the chickens. Hehehe. And don't you think for a minute that there aren't already blueprints for it on the computer somewhere...

From a teen's perspective:
Give us some credit. We can pick up on sarcasam. I mean, we speak Sarcasam FLUENTLY from the minute we turn thirteen! Even with writing, we can detect it. And even if we don't detect it, we're smart enough to say, "Hey, it shouldn't be like that."
Plus, there are the smileys. I've noticed with posts like that,

,

/

, and/or a "just kidding" frequently accompany them.
We're smart. Not brilliant. But we know our sarcasam.
