Bad exp with an egg buyer. UPDATE READ PAGE 5! HOLY

They are sending the eggs back to you? poor eggs. Or is that well traveled eggs.

What a shame when there was someone so close willing to help.

Good Luck. What kind of eggs are they anyway?

Darn, I was prepared to get them. Oh well, I did try. Thanks, Dilly, that was sweet of you.

An FYI if you don't know how I ship eggs, Each egg is bubble wrapped with area for air on ends, and pack them in straw, shavings, hay or newspaper. Box is marked EGGS and UP on all sides and top. Ph # and "call for pick up when a ph# is included. OK here is the latest! THIS WOMAN IS INSANE... here is her latest harrassing email to drive me nuts! ANyone want to email her and teach her proper EGG shipment, PLEASE PLEASE DO SO.. Edited to remove her email.HERE is what she THINKS about my INDv wrapping and safe packing in bubble wrap:

Kari,
I picked up eggs today (as I said, I wanted to talk to my PO manager.) Seems a couple of things happened: PO played a part, signature was not required and should have been delivered to my house...even so, I should have received a phone call from PO, however, as manager pointed out your handwritten "Eggs" probably didn't get noticed. Also, you just wrote my phone number on my address label....no notice to "Call on Arrival."

I get eggs, live poultry, and adult and juveniles regulary....what I know works is this: put HOLES in the box (evidently, psychologically, this makes a difference to USPS...holes in the box means "LIVING")....mark "LIVE ANIMALS" and "PERISHABLE" on the box...these are the words USPS is trained to look for. Also, prominently mark "CALL UPON ARRIVAL" along with phone number. Lastly, eggs should NOT be packed in bubble wrap, this reduces oxygen and, therefore, hatchability....when I get eggs from the hatchery, they come in egg crates surrounded by shredded and wadded newspaper, cornstarch popcorn, etc. I called hatchery I deal with and asked about the bubble wrap around the eggs and was told this is a definite no-no...okay to use bubble wrap as "loose" package protection, but not to wrap and tape individual eggs. Again, I don't know how far you usually ship, avg temp, etc. so maybe hatchability rate has been okay for you using methods you are using???

poor little eggies coudn't breathe!!!

wow, what a nutcase!!!

That's just crazy. I ship with bubble wrap- I leave one end open but that's just me. I would never put holes in a perfectly good box for shipping eggs. Plus I don't ever write eggs or fragile on the box for fear that the post office will play kick ball with it. Before anyone debates that, I have been in the P.O. loading dock when they've purposely thrown something harder because it said "fragile". I've seen UPS and FEDEX do the same.

I agree with the whole "Fragile" thing written on the box. I've had people send me pictures in a bubble envelope that said "Fragile-Pictures" and there is a crease where it was bent the entire shipment!

That is not an accident! Same with shipping plants. It seems that most of the time when you put "Fragile" it's just an invitation to see how much damage you can do to an object without getting caught.

Honestly, it sounds like this woman is a royal pain, and her PO probably was just messing with her for payback for all the he** she's put them through. Your poor eggs just got caught in the middle. I'm sure this isn't the last you've heard from her. You'll be getting a call in a couple of weeks when she is blaming you for zero hatch rate.

So,at least she got the eggs. I have read the opinions on bubble wrapping. I bubble wrap mine and most people get good hatch rates. Distance is a factor, but everyone that buys eggs is aware of that. I don't think you owe her anything, but if you want to ease your mind,I'd tell her to keep you advised on her hatch and if it is poor, then you could offer to send extra eggs on her next order to help make up for it.
Oh, I mark mine "fragile and Perishable" and have been adding "Live Embryos-Do Not X-Ray" I don't think any of the boxes have been destroyed.

WOW

I suppose that the lady in Florida that I shipped to lied. She said she had a great hatch and guess what?........I bubble wrap my eggs!

I am sorry you have to deal with this!

When she calls in a few weeks and complains about her hatch rate I would offer her more.........as long as she paid for shipping!

While not a million-egg-incubation queen like some, I have received several boxes of shippped eggs from BYCrs and non-BYCrs.

EVERY TIME they have been wrapped as you described, and then packed gently but tightly in the box with newspaper, more bubble wrap or shredded paper.

EVERY TIME they have arrived 100% safely - not even a crack.

EVERY TIME I've had hatch rates of at least 70%.

I used the exact same method to ship my peahen eggs and so far each email has said they arrived in good shape. I know at least some have already started developing for them as well. AND that's with notoriously quirky peahen eggs...

My personal belief: The hatcheries don't use the bubble wrap method because it is time consuming and expensive. It's a lot cheaper and quicker just to stuff some shavings in an egg carton, wrap the whole thing with some shredded paper and hope for the best.....OH, and then tell the buyer they can't be held responsible for damage in shipping...

I recently got some button quail eggs from jkcove08 - over 30 of those tiny little suckers all neatly bubble wrapped and all arrived in perfect condition. The tedium of it! The time taken to wrap those eggs would have cost a company an hour's pay for someone, in addition to buying bubble wrap - probably $10-12 at least in handling...

FloridaChick,

Want me to send her a picture of poor hatachability due to your packaging? 12 Australorps hatched out a week ago today. 12 out of 14 set.

On the flip side...the silkies I set that came in shredded newspaper only- I only got four out of nine set. (total of 14 sent).

Dont even get me started on the two disastrous boxes from the hatchery (the original plus the replacement box)...where I think i got TWO eggs to hatch and had a yokie nasty mess when those boxes arrived.(incidentally, this is the batch with the exploding rotten egg during hatch).

I think you should go buy eggs from the grocery store, and then package them exactly as she says...ship them to her at "no charge" to make it up to her.

But then again, I am feeling evil today.
