No, gout has not been ruled out, and thanks for bringing this up again. Thanks for your input.wait... backtracking a bit, was gout ruled out? I have known people with gout before, I know it can come and go and vary in severity, like they may not be able to walk well for a few weeks and have considerable pain and then feel relatively normal for awhile and then have flare ups again.
I did a little searching for more info and found this. Definitely worth a read. It suggests possible causes and treatments, all of which are dietary (as in people, modifying the diet can lead to improvement). Vitamin A seems to be involved if it is indeed gout.

I am not opposed to giving him anything if it’ll help! Any idea of dosage??How would you feel about trying some ibuprofen to reduce swelling and pain?
I bought some children’s liquid Advil today for him. I’ve got the dosage as 1.5 ml twice a day. Any idea as to how long I should do this for him? 3/5/7 days??How would you feel about trying some ibuprofen to reduce swelling and pain?
