BAD PIP URGEBT HELP NEEDED

thanks for this advice. the hole he has made is fairly large, and he gets his beak right out. I don't think I could candle him without risking severe drop in temp and humidity for him and all the other eggs. I am going to try going back to the preschool in 2 hours to see if they will let me in and I will see if he/she has progressed at all. I wasn't too worried about drowning because of seeing the beak, but I am concerned that he/she hasn't started zipping to the right or left of the original pip yet.

Ok well I came back and the size of the hole hasn't increased at all. Is this pretty much just all pipping and I should relax and consider it within the 24 hour window before zipping? I can't help but think he she can't move to zip, but it's making good beak movements....

Timing background: pipped some time between 3:30 yesterday afternoon and 11:30 this morning (it's in a preschool). I came back at 2 and watched it knock that big piece if shell off. I've been checking in since then and it's now 7 and it's only knocked a tiny tiny piece off. I can't check in with it at about 12 hours from the big piece because it will be the middle of the night and locked up.

The membrane where the shell has been knocked off is starting to look yellow but the humidity is still pretty high. I'm going Togo home and assemble supplies to assist just in case. I'm not getting a good feeling here :( any advice very welcome. Still hearing cheeping, that's the only positive I've got right now :(

Chirping is Good. If you decide to assist go slow and only work in the area you documented the air cell. A little bigger window into the egg should give you some good perspective on the "lay of the land". take your time and let the chick have the oprotunity to do as much of the work as possible. Remember that it is an assist and keep it warm!

I assume I could do the work with the egg under the heat lamp I set up for the brooder so the other eggs can stay warm in the incubator? Just quickly open it to grab the egg out and go from there? I am really torn up, I don't want to assist too early unecessarily, and I don't want to cool/dry out the other eggs. But, I know that it's a long wait until I can get in again at 8:30. I wish I just knew exactly what to do!

can you tell I am a worrier?

Personally, after waiting too long with 2 of mine I would be ready get a better look at what is going on. It's been quite a while. Just keep in mind that once you get a better look at it you may decide that waiting may be appropriate. Large pip with no progress is what I watched for. If it makes you feel any better I just completed my first week long hatch and as a first timer I did not loose a single chick by assisting. It's all in the timing and exercising great care.

The heat lamp would probably be good. I just kept putting the egg in and out of my hatcher, but my setup didn't react with temp and humidity swings like some do.
