Baking Soda/Vinegar ratio for Euthanasia?

I have dispatched two chicks with this method. I used a cup of each in a gallon size ziplock bag. I actually put the chick in one bag ran a 1/2 " out of the bag and zipped it as tight as I could and sealed with duct tape. Then put a cup of baking soda in another ziplocc with a drinking cup with vinegar in it, put the other end of the hose in this bag, sealed it up and then dumped over the cup with the vinegar. It was all over in about 2 minutes. Good luck.

With a hatchet....It would be OVER in a Split-Second.

And IF a hatchet ain't QUICK-ENOUGH...Use a Sledge-Hammer!

Geez.....

disgusting to me these "painless killing methods"....what a BUNCH of CRAP !!!

Never thought of using a sledge hammer!

Anyone thought of a guilliotine? Now, thats just as quick as a hatchet! AND no worries about missing fingers LOL! Make sure you make one that would put "one size fits all birds".

I'm just fixin to start killin chickens myself. I don't know what method I will use but my sweet mother-in-law is going to show me how to do by wringing the neck. Wish me luck!

I know everyone has their preferred method, and I respect their choices. But the vehement argumentation that cutting off the head is painless is very much an assumption, if not a total fallacy. There are two cases of people being beheaded where they were conscious afterward. Lavoisier, a chemist, had a colleague count how many times he blinked after the beheading which was about 15 seconds I believe, and the second was a murderer named Languille that responded to his name after being beheaded with pupil contractions which means he was focusing, not spasming. So...I'm just saying some believe the freezing is good, some the CO2, some beheading, some smashing...but until we ourselves experience it and can communicate from the dead how painful or non-painful it was, I think to each their own (as long as its legal) is a good policy on euthanasia.

I have had to do it a few times now, I have found that if doing it by myself a simple ringing of the neck works best. I have used a hatchet as well, but it can be a bit messy and a little tough with one person. I put the chicken in a bag with its head and neck out of the bag and twist two times around, drop the head and done. It is sad, but seems to be the easiest for me. I have given the birds a few final pets on the head, I think more for me then them, just wishing their last few moment are not totally stressed. Interesting thread.

This is all true... if you can't do it, see if any other BYC folks in your area can wring its neck, or decapitate... much more humane, IMO

ETA : sorry, I did not see that it was already done... I hope it went well for you and the baby... either way, it is very hard. I see that many people here are getting REALLY mean about all of this. Not cool. Hang in there, at least you were kind enough to end its suffering, and not just let it lay around until it finally died... I am impressed by your compassion.
