Love it! Yea - I was hooked the first time I saw chickens in tractor supply. Been wanting to do this for years. I was gonna wait until this spring until I saw that I could pick the date for when the chicks would come in the mail. They will be adults in December so I’ll have laying hens in the spring rather than waiting all summer. Now how to keep them safe through the winter. Open to suggestions. Jan will have us down to 5 degrees for a few days.
If you post your general location on your profile, you'll get recommendations based on your locale. If 5 (F or C?) is your low, your birds likely won't need heat over the winter. Your bigger concern will be protection from wind and drafts without compromising air circulation - which isn't as impossible as it sounds ... honest!

Hello! Welcome to BYC! One thing to remember when building a coop is 1/2 inch hardware cloth is you friend and your chickens protection! Use it on every opening on the coop and the run! You will be glad you did. Also run a 2 foot wide pc. All around the perimeter of the coop and run. Use metal staples to hold it in place on the ground ( cheap on Temu). Utilize plenty of ventilation well above their heads so it is not drafty on them. 😊
Thank you. We have been working on our coops and they have hardware cloth from the windows, going under the roof and to the other side. We are doing our best to make sure it‘s in there solid with no holes bigger than the hardware cloth. We have the coops on stilts. We went with three coops - 1 for guineas and 2 for chickens - that way we can separate chickens if we want.
